Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak software, has announced that, in collaboration with Cisco, it has developed a framework enabling the Riak KV NoSQL database to run on Apache Mesos, bringing operational efficiency and high-elasticity to big data services. "The goal is to try and simplify and make it easy for clients to get business solutions as quickly as possible instead of worrying about the distributed data tier," said Adam Wray, CEO of Basho.

Ricoh Company, Ltd, the printing and document management company, is using Oracle's SPARC T5 servers with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances and Oracle Database to analyze data from RICOH @Remote, its real-time support service for customers in more than 100 countries and regions. To unify the data across the company for accurate views and analysis, Ricoh built a private cloud accessible by the entire remote service group that allows high speed access from internal networks.

Pepperdata has arrived on the big data scene with the goal of controlling workflows in Hadoop to optimize cluster performance. To support developers and operations professionals in their push to implement DevOps principles for their infrastructure environments, ProfitBricks, a provider of cloud infrastructure, is adding support for DevOps tools Ansible and Chef. Ansible is a platform for configuring and managing data center infrastructure that combines multi-node software deployment, ad hoc task execution, and configuration management, and is used by DevOps professionals as they use its playbooks functionality to automate cloud infrastructure. Chef, which is written in the Ruby programming language, makes it easier to manage complex infrastructure and the applications running on it.

"Mainframe data is growing tremendously and companies want to utilize it," said James Vincent, president of SHARE. "They are investing in data analytics," he added. "But data security and privacy are really growing in importance."

IBM today announced a significant expansion of the mainframe's strategy of embracing open source-based technologies and open communities. The company disclosed it is shipping two Linux mainframe servers - called LinuxONE - which the company brands as "the most secure Linux servers in the industry." The company also announced it is ramping up its support for open source offerings on its mainframe systems.

Data integration software provider Informatica has been acquired by a company controlled by the Permira funds and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Microsoft Corporation and Salesforce Ventures, Salesforce's corporate investment group, are also strategic investors in the company alongside the Permira funds and CPPIB. In making the announcement, Informatica said the new ownership would allow it continue to grow while taking a longer view rather than focusing on quarters.

Google, whose name became synonymous with internet search, is reorganizing to maintain its innovation and competitiveness. The company is creating a new public holding company called Alphabet, with Google as well as other companies, housed within the new structure. According to Larry Page, CEO of Google, the reorganization is part of an effort to avoid getting "too comfortable," observing in a blog post that in the tech industry, "where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.

IBM launched a new program intended to mentor and energize students to innovate using IBM Cloud technologies. The program, called the Academic Initiative for Cloud, will create cloud development curricula using Bluemix, IBM's platform-as-a-service, in over 200 universities, reaching more than 20,000 students in 36 countries. The company also announced a series of industry Hackathons reaching tens of thousands of new developers and a set of diversity programs for women coders.

Denodo, a provider of data virtualization software, formed a technology partnership with Tableau Software, which offers software for analyzing and visualizing data. As a part of the relationship, Denodo is delivering the "Denodo Tableau Data Extract (TDE) Exporter Tool," which will improve the performance and management of data to enable data exploration and self-service BI and analytics. According to the vendors, the enhanced integration between the two technologies will enable IT departments to easily provision reusable and integrated data services while enabling enterprise data consumers to analyze, visualize and share information.

In 1965, Dick Pick and Don Nelson originally implemented PICK as the "Generalized Information Retrieval Language System" (GIRLS) on an IBM System/360 at TRW for use by the U.S. Army to control the inventory of Cheyenne helicopter parts. That was 50 years ago and MultiValue is still thriving today. It is a testament to the quality and flexibility of the technology for it to be going strong 50 years after its creation.
