Couchbase has introduced N1QL (pronounced as "nickel") in its NoSQL distributed database Couchbase Server. Put simply N1QL is "SQL for documents," explained Couchbase senior product manager Ilam Siva during a recent DBTA webcast.

Sqrrl, a big data analytics company that develops software to uncover hidden patterns, trends, and links in data, has announced the launch of Sqrrl Enterprise 2.0 coinciding with receiving $7 million in new funding. Sqrrl was developed by former employees of the NSA. "We don't shy away from our NSA heritage, we see it as a strength," stated Ely Kahn, co-founder and director of business development for Sqrrl.

Oracle has begun shipping its new Oracle Big Data Discovery and Oracle GoldenGate for Big Data products. With Oracle GoldenGate for Big Data, the technology, which is used to replicate data from system to system in real time, adds Hadoop as a target environment, and with Big Data Discovery, Oracle provides an end to end environment that is visual and intuitive in order to allow business analysts and business users to participate in the big data analytics process.

Oracle Linux images are now available on the Docker Hub Registry, a repository for Docker-based components, including applications and operating systems. Oracle Linux joins MySQL, which is already on Docker Hub and has been downloaded millions of times. "With Oracle Linux and MySQL images available on the Docker Hub Registry, users will be able to quickly create and publish custom Docker containers that layer applications on top of Oracle Linux and MySQL, which is a great time-saver for both independent software vendors and IT departments," said Wim Coekaerts, senior vice president, Linux and Virtualization Engineering, Oracle.

Syncsort, a provider of big data and mainframe software, has completed the acquisition of UK-based William Data Systems, a provider of advanced network monitoring and security software products for the IBM z Systems z/OS mainframe platform. According to Syncsort, because the mainframe is a high-volume transactional supercomputer, the networking and security data collected by the William Data product suite is particularly valuable to fast-growing big data and analytical platforms.

GridGain Systems, provider of open source and commercial in-memory data fabric solutions, is introducing a new release of the GridGain In-Memory Data Fabric Enterprise Edition built on Apache Ignite. BMC Software announced plans to acquire assets of CDB Software, Inc., a mainframe data management company that has developed utilities for managing IBM DB2 databases with a minimum of outages. CDB's technology includes software utilities for DB2 administration, maintenance, application tuning, and backup/recovery.

Teradata is introducing new big data applications that incorporate recently acquired capabilities and technologies from Revelytix and Thing Big Analytics. The new offerings include solutions targeted to specific verticals such as retail and healthcare, new Teradata Loom 2.4 capabilities to expand the depth and breadth of metadata in the data lake, and a new fixed price/fixed time-frame data lake optimization service offering. Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has announced plans to acquire Pentaho Corporation, a big data integration and business analytics company with an open source-based platform for diverse big data deployments. According to Hitachi, the acquisition helps to fulfill its strategy of delivering business innovations that integrate machine data, information technology, and analytics to distill value from big data and the Internet of Things. The acquisition of Pentaho is expected to be complete by June 2015.

MemSQL has introduced the MemSQL Spark Connector. According to the vendor, the combination of an in-memory database from MemSQL and Spark's memory optimized processing framework gives enterprises the benefit of fast access to transactions, ETL, and analytics.
