Oracle Database 11g Release 2 became generally available and downloadable yesterday from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Improvements have been made in all key areas, with a general emphasis on helping customers lower their IT infrastructure costs. Announcing the new release during a conference call yesterday, Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice president of Database Server Technologies, Oracle observed, "Right now the majority of our installed base customers are running on 10g R2, with a good number on 11g R1. The reason 11g R2 is important is not only for the innovations in the release but it is really the release that the masses of our installed base are going to be moving to as they go to the 11g family of databases."

Stratavia, an independent provider of data center automation and cloud enablement software solutions, has announced the release of the Sybase Migration Data Center Automation Application, a software solution aimed at enabling organizations to make an error-free migration from Sybase database environments to their choice of Oracle, as well as Microsoft SQL Server or IBM DB2 database platforms. Stratavia customers can now automate the migration of Sybase database objects, code and data from a centralized location, while also enabling self-service access for application teams to begin their testing without impacting migration timelines.

Oracle has extended the Oracle Validated Configurations program to include Oracle VM server virtualization software. "The Validated Configurations program creates best practices for deploying Linux in the enterprise," Monica Kumar, senior director, product marketing, Oracle, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "Oracle has created a test kit which we share with partners, customers and actually it is an open source test kit. It is available for free download by anyone. You can use a test kit to run multiple tests against a stack, which includes servers, storage, drivers, networking components, operating system—in this case being Linux—and now we have added virtualization to that stack and an Oracle Database version."

Unisys has introduced a new model to the SmartSource Micro Series line of multi-function remote deposit scanners. The MicroEX adds full-page imaging capabilities, with a scan height from 2.13 inches (54 millimeters) to 8.5 inches (216 millimeters) and a length from 3.15 inches (80 millimeters) to 13.98 inches (355 millimeters).

Pentaho Corporation, a commercial open source business intelligence and data integration software vendor, has announced the release of Pentaho BI Suite Version 3.5, which includes new report and dashboard design capabilities for both business and IT users, as well as technical and packaging changes to enable broad use of Pentaho for embedded business intelligence by OEMs and SaaS providers. In addition to the new software, Pentaho is also offering a new report migration service that enables the conversion of reporting from proprietary business intelligence platforms to the lower-cost Pentaho reporting tools.

Sentrigo, Inc., a database security software vendor, has announced a substantial expansion of its Hedgehog database activity monitoring and intrusion prevention suite. The Hedgehog software provides full-visibility database activity monitoring and real-time protection and has been adopted by numerous Global 2000 companies to defend mission-critical data against insider misuse as well as outsider intrusion. With this release, Hedgehog 3.0 now supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008 running on Windows Server 2008, in addition to already supported SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000 running on earlier Windows platforms. Additionally, Hedgehog vPatch, Sentrigo's virtual patching solution, now includes dozens of additional protections specific to SQL Server. Hedgehog 3.0 also provides several enhancements based on customer input, specifically to meet the accelerating demand for database monitoring to satisfy regulatory requirements.

BMC Software announced a new release of its BMC Batch Impact Manager solution, intended to reduce the time needed to resolve IT bottlenecks in batch environments. BMC says its Batch Impact Manager offers the only batch-processing tool that not only can predict problems before they happen and recommend ways to avoid them, but also provides ways to fix the issues completely.

IBM announced four IBM Rational products that are among the first to apply the new Change Management services developed by the Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) initiative. Guardium, a database security company, has announced enhanced support for Sybase's enterprise data management platforms. Guardium provides fine-grained auditing, real-time monitoring and automated vulnerability assessment for Sybase's core Database Management System (DBMS) platforms, including: Sybase ASE 15, for high-performance, mission-critical applications, and Sybase IQ, a column-based analytics server, for business reporting and analytics requirements. Support for Sybase IQ 12 is currently shipping in Guardium 7, with support for Sybase IQ 15 available in Guardium's next major release.

Virtual Bridges, IBM and Canonical have introduced a new version of a Linux-server based virtual desktop with the release of Virtual Bridges' VERDE 2.0 software. RightScale, Jaspersoft, Talend and Vertica have announced an integrated solutions stack intended to enable customers to increase agility and lower costs by combining the power of the cloud, a high-performance analytical database, and BI and data integration software. RightScale is a cloud computing management provider and offers a fully automated cloud management platform that enables customers to design, deploy, and manage business-critical applications on the cloud. Vertica provides the analytical database which is based on column-structure architecture. The BI software is provided by open source BI vendor Jaspersoft, and the data integration software by open source vendor Talend. This BI stack is an example of the power of collaboration among vendors to deliver integrated solutions, and by focusing their efforts on delivering BI on the cloud, customers now have tools to help them move quickly with BI projects.
