MapR Technologies is integrating LucidWorks Search with the MapR Platform for Apache Hadoop to enable customers to perform predictive analytics, full search and discovery; and conduct advanced database operations on one platform. Integrated search and discovery on the MapR Big Data platform is currently in beta, and will be generally available next quarter in MapR's just-released M7 Edition, which combines Hadoop with NoSQL capabilities.

Database Plugins, a provider of data-centric computing solutions, has announced the addition of a secure transcoding framework to its line of media management software. The solution, "dbTranscoder," addresses the storing, streaming and transcoding of media data in an Oracle database. "This mechanism allows you to store your multimedia data in the database but still manipulate it through common file-based semantics by programs that are expecting that multimedia data to exist in a file somewhere," Steve Guilford, founder and CEO of Database Plugins, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

A new release of Oracle Secure Global Desktop, part of Oracle's Desktop Virtualization portfolio, extends secure access to cloud-hosted and on-premise enterprise applications and desktops from Apple iPad and iPad mini tablets, without the need for a VPN client. Now, through support of the HTML5 standard, Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.0 allows tablet users to access enterprise applications with just a web browser, so they can use their own devices for work. The new release provides tablet users, in addition to PC, MAC and desktop users, certified access to Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and web-based applications such as Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Siebel CRM, Oracle Primavera, and many others.

MongoDB Backup Service, available as a limited release, joins the free, cloud-based MongoDB Monitoring Service, which has more than 17,000 users. IBM's first-quarter 2013 revenues slipped across many categories, but its mainframe sales were healthy. The vendor's net income for the quarter was $3.0 billion, down 1% from the first quarter of 2012. Total revenues for the first quarter totaled $23.4 billion, down 5%. While total systems revenues decreased 13%, revenues from System z mainframe server products increased 7% compared with the year-ago period - and total delivery of System z computing power, as measured in MIPS (millions of instructions per second), increased 27%.

Rocket U2 is now providing a single ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver for UniData and UniVerse that supports both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The driver provides a standard interface for user applications, third-party reporting and BI tools to connect with data sources. Revelation Software recently held its user conference in Nashville, Tenn. "At the conference, we really emphasize training," Robert Catalano, director of sales at Revelation, tells DBTA. At this year's event, particular emphasis was placed on O4W training, he notes. Oklahoma City Housing Authority (OCHA) has selected Informer Dashboards from Entrinsik to help it quickly and easily create and share data visualizations. Informer Dashboards answers a pressing need for OCHA. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has various reporting guidelines for housing authorities that require a significant amount of data to ensure compliance. HUD is beginning to require dashboards as a way of presenting this data and OCHA had no easy way of quickly and easily developing the necessary visualizations.

IBM is investing $1 billion in research and development to design, create and integrate new Flash solutions into its expanding portfolio of servers, storage systems and middleware. Flash, a highly efficient re-writable memory, can speed the response times of information gathering in servers and storage systems from milliseconds to microseconds, the company says. Because it contains no moving parts, the technology is also more reliable, durable and more energy efficient than spinning hard drives.

MarkLogic Corporation, the provider of an enterprise NoSQL database platform, announced that it has closed a $25 million round of growth capital led by Sequoia Capital and Tenaya Capital, with participation from Northgate Capital. MarkLogic CEO Gary Bloom also made a personal investment in this financing round. With capital to fuel sales and marketing, MarkLogic seeks to go after the broader market of enterprise class customers while also targeting several key areas for feature expansion, Bloom told DBTA.
