According to the company, Oracle VM 3.0 is suitable for all data center workloads and features new policy-based management capabilities, advanced storage management via the Oracle VM Storage Connect plug-in API; centralized network configuration management, improved ease-of-use and Open Virtualization Format (OVF) support.

At VMworld 2011 yesterday, VMware, Inc. announced a new database provisioning and operations solution designed to deliver a database as a service model for the enterprise. Described as an extension of VMware's Cloud Application Platform strategy, VMware vFabric Data Director aims to give IT the ability to control and manage a growing set of heterogeneous databases through policy-based automation, while streamlining application development via a self-service provisioning model for developers to rapidly access the database services needed for modern applications. Built on VMware vSphere, vFabric Data Director will also extend the benefits of virtualized infrastructures to the database tier, optimizing resource utilization for increased operational efficiency and cost savings.

MarkLogic Corporation has announced that Kaplan Publishing, a publisher of academic and professional development resources, has built a new iOS application using MarkLogic Server as the platform beneath a customized digital content reader developed by Bluefire Productions. Kaplan Mobile allows registered students to download a free electronic copy of their course books to their mobile devices. The application is available for download for free from the Apple iTunes Store for all iOS devices. MarkLogic has worked on mobile interfaces for customers in the past, some in the government, David Gorbet, vice president, Product Strategy at MarkLogic, tells 5 Minute Briefing, "but this is the first time to my knowledge that anybody is doing a full course's worth of material as a mobile application."

(MSI) is launching an application for community health centers (CHCs) built on the InterSystems Caché high-performance object database. Quest Software, Inc. expanded its Toad product portfolio with the addition of free and commercial versions of Toad for Sybase. The new suite adds Sybase ASE, Sybase IQ and SQL Anywhere to Toad's list of supported relational and non-relational database platforms. Sybase has announced its mobile device security and application management software support Cisco Cius - a highly secure business tablet created for the enterprise. The announcement extends Sybase's device agnostic approach to support a growing list that includes Android (smartphones and tablets), iOS (iPhone and iPad), Windows Mobile, Symbian and BlackBerry. Rocket's free U2 DataVu Query tool has been enhanced with new capabilities to combine users' queries and results. Users can filter and quickly create charts with just a couple of clicks. In addition, a new quick-start wizard guides users through the steps to connect to U2 data. HP and Autonomy Corporation plc have announced plans for HP (through an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, HP SPV) to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Autonomy for £25.50 ($42.11) per share in cash. "Together with Autonomy, we plan to reinvent how both unstructured and structured data is processed, analyzed, optimized, automated and protected. Autonomy has an attractive business model, including a strong cloud-based solution set, which is aligned with HP's efforts to improve our portfolio mix," said Léo Apotheker, HP president and chief executive officer, in a statement issued by the company.

Oracle WebLogic Server 11g, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, together with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle's Sun Blade X6270 M2 server module, has set a new record for all 2-processor systems on the industry-standard SPECjEnterprise2010 benchmark. Informatica Corporation has announced the availability of what the company describes as the industry's first dynamic data masking (DDM) solution. Informatica Dynamic Data Masking provides real-time, policy-driven obfuscation of sensitive data to address a wide range of common data security and privacy challenges without requiring any changes to database or application source code and is intended to address problems that cannot be solved by other technologies such as IAM (identity access management), SDM (static data masking). EMC Corp. has announced its next generation mainframe virtual tape library (VTL). Designed for use in IBM z/OS and Unisys OS2200 environments, EMC says the new DLm6000 is the industry's fastest mainframe VTL with 2x the performance of its nearest competitor. By leveraging the latest advances in EMC Data Domain and EMC VNX storage systems, the company says the DLm6000 can address the full range of mainframe tape workloads with a single, consolidated all-disk system and will enable mainframe users to minimize their storage and replication costs and improve their disaster recovery capabilities. By matching different workloads to the most appropriate storage, the DLm6000 maximizes system performance and accelerates data retrievals and backup and recovery times. The new EMC DLm6000 will be available in September, 2011.

Unisys Corporation announced that it has helped the General Services Administration (GSA) successfully migrate all of its 17,000 email users to Google Apps for Government, a secure cloud-based email and collaboration platform. The transition makes GSA the first federal government agency to migrate all of its employees to a cloud-based email solution. Based on the success of its work with the GSA and other agencies, Unisys also announced the availability of its Collaborative Office Solutions - Google Apps for Government. Working with Google and Tempus Nova, Unisys will provide a set of services to help agencies accomplish their enterprise transitions to Google Apps for Government. Through this solution, agencies can benefit from reduced costs associated with cloud-based systems, increased uptime and availability of agency data, and the confidence of a secure solution that has received Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) authorization.

Unisys reported a second-quarter 2011 net loss of $11.6 million, or a loss of 27 cents per diluted share. The results include a previously announced charge of $45.7 million related to debt reduction and a pre-tax charge of $13.5 million related to the loss of an old non-income tax case concerning the company's former Brazilian manufacturing operations. Excluding these charges, non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were 93 cents in the quarter.. Revenue in the second quarter of 2011 declined 10 percent to $937 million compared with $1.04 billion in the year-ago quarter. Foreign currency fluctuations had a 5 percentage-point positive impact on revenue in the quarter.
