SAP BusinessObjects reporting solution vendor LaunchWorks Inc. has partnered with Centigon Solutions, developer of location intelligence solutions for SAP BusinessObjects, to deliver integrated location and mapping intelligence known as GMaps Plugin in secure outward facing dashboards, providing real-time business intelligence. The integration partnership is intended to enable customers to provide better product quality, reduced time and costs, and quicker identification of areas that need improvement by consuming and monetizing business intelligence quickly and accurately.

With many organizations having established data warehouse solutions there comes a point where the solution needs to be extended in an unusual direction. This challenge presented when a European mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) wanted to add both compliance and archiving functionality to their existing data warehouse. MVNOs differentiate themselves by very competitive pricing on certain parts of the call package, for example ethnic MVNOs target ethnic communities by providing inexpensive calls to their home country. To enable such offerings and to track costs, especially where subscribers start using the service in unexpected and possibly costly ways, is a key business function and this is where the data warehouse is used.

Big data is toughfor enterprises to handle, and adding to the challenge is the fact that much of it is unstructured data—business documents, presentations, log files, and social media data. Respondents to a survey of 264 data managers and professionals—subscribers to Database Trends and Applications—almost unanimously agree that unstructured data is on the rise and ready to engulf their current data management systems. The trouble is, their management typically does not understand the scope of the challenge and is failing to recognize the significance of unstructured data assets to the business.

SAP AG introduced a new solution to help organizations gain real-time insights into market trends and customer sentiment. The SAP rapid-deployment solution for sentiment intelligence with SAP HANA is intended to allow users to analyze customer sentiment from social networking sites, communities, wikis, blogs and other sources, and combine the information with CRM data. Customers that have had success getting started with big data analytics are the ones that have set out to solve a very specific use case or set out to solve a specific problem, David Jonker, director of marketing for database and technology at SAP, tells DBTA. Big data analytics and visualization vendor Centrifuge has released version 2.7 of Visual Network Analysis, its big data analytics platform. Business intelligence software vendor Tableau has announced that direct access to the MapR Distribution for Apache Hadoop for big data analytics is included in Tableau 7.0.7. This enables customers to instantly construct reports, data visualizations and dashboards without any programming or coding. The 7.0.7 update also includes support for Tableau's Desktop and Server products in Japanese.

Quest Software has announced that vRanger 6.0, the latest version of its virtual data protection solution which provides backup, replication, and recovery for VMware, now also enables customers to back up and restore physical Windows servers. Providing a single source of protection for both virtual and physical environments, vRanger 6.0 is VMware Ready certified for vSphere 5, provides OS support for Windows Server 2003 and 2008, and also will support Windows Server 2012 upon its release to market. "We feel that we can reduce the complexity and reduce the number of tools used in a Windows environment that is using VMware," Greg Davoll, senior director, product marketing, data protection business, at Quest, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

VMware, Inc., a provider of virtualization and cloud infrastructure, says it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nicira, Inc., a network virtualization vendor. VMware will acquire Nicira for approximately $1.05 billion in cash plus approximately $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties expect the acquisition to close during the second half of 2012, according to VMware. The acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both VMware and Nicira and the stockholders of Nicira.

STORServer, a provider of data backup solutions for the mid-market, has announced the availability of version 4.5 of its Archive Backup Client for OpenVMS, which enables users to include their OpenVMS servers in their heterogeneous IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup solution. The updates to the backup software include a major enhancement to file backup speed and performance when backing up large numbers of files in a single directory. According to the company, it has verified backup performance improvements of nearly 30 times the throughput of the previous implementation.

Oracle announced a new release of its mainframe rehosting platform, now optimized for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, that it says is capable of delivering up to 8x performance gains for rehosted IBM CICS and IMS applications. The platform is intended to help customers reduce mainframe IT costs by rehosting larger-scale mainframe applications more rapidly and running them more efficiently on traditional Linux or Unix servers, engineered systems, and in enterprise clouds.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has signed a distribution partnership agreement with Tokyo-based Insight Technology Inc. (ITI). The reseller agreement provides ITI the rights to distribute Attunity's data replication solutions in Japan, together with ITI's database machine "Insight Qube." Data warehousing is undergoing the most radical transformation seen since it was first conceived in the 1970s, and brought to market in the late 1980s and 1990s. One reason for this transformation is that data warehouses are on the front lines of the big data explosion. Findings from a new survey of IOUG members indicate that while most companies have well-established data warehouse systems, adoption is still limited within their organizations. This survey, underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., included input from 421 data managers and professionals.

EMC has introduced a high-end virtual tape library product for large enterprise mainframe environments. The new tape library has two unique enhancements, Jim O'Connor, senior marketing manager for backup and recovery systems at EMC, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Additionally, TED makes it easier for global enterprises to comply with data jurisdiction policy requirements.
