Oracle has announced the general availability of the Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, which was first introduced at Oracle OpenWorld in September by Oracle chairman and CTO Larry Ellison. Billed as "the cloud for your most demanding workloads," the Bare Metal Cloud Services offering is a public cloud that offers bare metal compute in a virtualized, high performance network environment.

Broadcom Limited and Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement under which Broadcom will acquire Brocade, a vendor in the Fibre Channel storage area network switching and IP networking space, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $5.5 billion, plus $0.4 billion of net debt, for a total of $5.9 billion. Broadcom plans to retain Brocade's Fibre Channel SAN switching business and divest Brocade's IP networking business, consisting of wireless and campus networking, data center switching and routing, and software networking solutions, including the recently acquired Ruckus Wireless.

Rocket Software is releasing an enhanced version of its Discover platform, boosting the self-service business intelligence platform for MultiValue customers. Rocket Discover 1.6, with its native interface to Rocket D3, UniVerse and UniData databases, will enable business users to connect to MV data sources through secure Web services, and use Discover's interface for data visualization and discovery, and collaboratively share dashboards.

SAP SE is releasing an update to its SAP S/4HANA platform aimed at improving user productivity. By utilizing a simplified data model and SAP Fiori 2.0 user experience, the SAP S/4HANA 1610 release can reduce complexity and allow applications to yield new business capabilities, according to SAP. "All companies and all line-of-business and industries need to start with 1610 if they want to capitalize on the digital transformation for their company before their competitor does," said Sven Denecken, senior vice president of product management, co-innovation and packaging S/4HANA at SAP SE.

Trifacta, a provider of data wrangling solutions, is launching Wrangler Edge, a platform designed for analyst teams wrangling diverse data outside of big data environments. "We are packing the Trifacta product and adding enterprise features such as the ability to schedule jobs to handle larger data volumes to connect to diverse sources," said Will Davis, director of product marketing. "We also added collaboration and sharing features as well all without requiring organizations to manage a large Hadoop infrastructure."

It can be easy for those of us who live and breathe MultiValue databases every day to forget the outside world exists. After all, we're all so busy juggling massive amounts of data and programming requests that we sometimes tune out other important factors that can affect how well IT organizations function. One of the main issues most commonly overlooked is disaster recovery, which is often treated with an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality as we deal with more pressing issues. Snowflake Computing is making its platform more accessible to users with Snowflake On Demand—a sign-up process for data users to get immediate insight from Snowflake's data warehouse. According to the vendor, with a virtual swipe of a credit card on Snowflake's website, data users can access the only data warehouse built for the cloud. They can store and analyze their data without relying on their own IT group to get up and running quickly.

Dell EMC is offering free software updates to the Dell EMC Unity family of storage systems, adding intelligent inline compression and support for the latest flash drives. Unity All-Flash now provides up to 384TB in a 2U rack through new support for 15.36TB 3D NAND (SAS Flash 4) flash drives, doubling Unity's drive density. Ending industry speculation, today, VMware and former rival Amazon Web Services (AWS) officially announced a partnership to provide a new hybrid cloud service dubbed, "VMware Cloud on AWS." In a joint announcement, the companies said the strategic alliance to build and deliver an integrated hybrid offering will give customers a full software-defined data center (SDDC), enabling customers to run applications across VMware vSphere-based private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. The partnership was initiated because customers are asking the companies to help make it easier to run their existing data center investments alongside AWS.
