Oracle has expanded its Sun Blade systems portfolio with new SPARC and x86 blade products and supporting integrated solutions. With this announcement, Oracle is targeting the enterprise, or private, cloud market and also highly virtualized data centers, says Dimitrios Dovas, director, product management for x86 servers, blades and networking, Oracle.

Oracle has announced the availability of Oracle Solaris 11 Express, which delivers advanced Oracle Solaris features that have been in development for over 5 years in a production-ready package. According to Oracle, new availability features reduce planned downtime by up to 50%, virtually eliminating traditional patching and maintenance related reboots and improving system boot time to tens of seconds. Oracle Solaris 11 Express also adds network virtualization and resource management to the built-in virtualization capabilities of Oracle Solaris.

Rocket Software has announced a free product called U2 DataVu Query. This tool provides fully functioning capabilities to graphically build queries against U2 data sources, including the ability to group and aggregate information to provide totals, and to print the results or export them to PDF. All queries built with U2 DataVu Query can be reused in U2 DataVu Report and Dashboard without any re-coding. This release continues SnapLogic's initiatives to meet the integration needs of the most demanding enterprises as they tackle "big data" problems driven the by the ever increasing adoption of cloud computing and mobile, distributed architectures. INNOVATION Data Processing, a mainframe data management provider, announced it is working with EMC, a storage solutions provider, to offer joint solutions for IBM's new zEnterprise mainframe, together with EMC Symmetrix multi-platform access from System z (i.e., z/SOS for Symmetrix). INNOVATION announced two new solutions, FDRSOS V5.4.75 and SOSINSTANT, to support enterprise backup of open systems onto a mainframe and EMC platform.

Unisys has announced a new solution intended to offer IT organizations a lower-cost alternative to coordinate delivery of IT services and support to their users. The new Unisys IT Service Management Software as a Service (ITSM SaaS) solution is hosted in Unisys client services centers. It gives clients' service personnel web-based access to a common set of IT service management tools based on standardized service-delivery processes, so they can provide services to end users in a uniform way.

Attachmate Corporation and Novell, Inc. recently announced the signing of a definitive agreement for Attachmate to acquire Novell for a purchase price of $6.10 per common share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $2.2 billion. Novell helps organizations securely deliver and manage computing services across physical, virtual and cloud computing environments through solutions for identity and security, systems management, collaboration and Linux-based operating platforms.

At SAP TechEd 2010 held in Bangalore, India, last week, SAP AG announced availability of the new High-Performance Analytic Appliance (HANA). According to the company, the SAP in-memory computing engine that resides at the heart of SAP HANA is an integrated database and calculation layer that allows the processing of massive quantities of real-time data in main memory to provide immediate results from analyses and transactions. The engine supports industry standards such as SQL and MDX but also incorporates a high-performance calculation engine that embeds procedural language support directly into the database kernel. This approach, SAP explains, eliminates the need to read data from the database, process it, and then write data back to the database.
