This will purportedly result in decreased demand for data managers and the need for fewer DBAs per groups of databases. However, the opposite seems to be occurring. In actuality, there is a growing need for more talent, as well as expertise to manage through growing complexity. A new survey, sponsored by Idera and conducted by Unisphere Research among more than 300 data executives, managers, and professionals finds that a more challenging data environment is arising due to a confluence of factors.

Database technology provider MongoDB today announced MongoDB Atlas, an elastic, on-demand cloud service that includes infrastructure and turnkey management. Citing feedback from a recent survey of more than 2,000 members of the MongoDB community the company says that 30% of respondents deploy on more than one public cloud. MongoDB Atlas will enable multi-vendor cloud strategies. To accommodate that use, the company says Atlas will be available on all popular cloud platforms - initially on Amazon Web Services, followed by Microsoft Azure, and then Google Cloud Platform.

IBM has introduced an update to its DB2 database software. IBM says the new release, IBM DB2 V11.1, will help developers more easily bridge on-premises applications to the cloud and enable a hybrid data architecture. IBM DB2 is also SQL-compatible with Oracle Database, making it possible to leverage existing skills to move applications from Oracle to DB2, according to IBM.

Red Hat, an open source solutions vendor, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 3scale, a provider of application programming interface (API) management technology. By adding 3scale to its existing portfolio, including Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift, and Red Hat Mobile Application Platform, Red Hat seeks to target the API economy with cloud integration and microservices-based architectures. The transaction is expected to close in June 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

The data center analytics platform gathers telemetry from hardware and software sensors, and then analyzes the information using advanced machine learning techniques to address critical data center operations such as policy compliance, application forensics, and the move to a whitelist security model. "Think of it as a time machine for your data center," said Yogesh Kaushik, senior director of product management, Tetration, Cisco.
