MarkLogic Corporation announced the MarkLogic enterprise NoSQL database running directly on the Hadoop Distributed File System(HDFS). This will enable Hadoop customers to take advantage of MarkLogic enterprise features - such as ACID transactions, role-based security, full-text search, and the flexibility of a granular document data model for real-time applications - while also leveraging their existing Hadoop infrastructure. A MarkLogic Server technology preview, featuring Hadoop Distributed File System(HDFS) storage, is available from MarkLogic Developer Labs and MarkLogic expects the production release to be generally available in early 2013.

IBM announced a tough third-quarter 2012, with revenues down across most sectors, with the exception of Websphere. For the quarter, IBM saw $3.8 billion in net profit on total revenues of $24.7 billion. The company's revenues were down 5% from the third quarter of 2011. Currency negatively impacted revenue growth by nearly $1 billion, the company adds.

Kognitio is allowing companies to download a fully functional copy of its software at no charge, and with no time restrictions. The company, which made the announcement at O'Reilly Strata and Hadoop World conference, said it is offering a full-featured, perpetual use license of up to 128 gigabytes without an expiration period or other limited functions normally found in "trialware." This capability gives companies the ability to do in-memory analytics on, for example, more than 500 million customer records at once.

SAP announced the availability of the SAP ERP Customer Order Entry mobile app on SAP Store. The opportunities and challenges presented by big data are addressed in a new report summarizing the results of a survey of data managers and professionals who are part of the Independent Oracle Users Group. The survey was underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc. Key highlights from the survey include the finding that more than one out of 10 data managers now have in excess of a petabyte of data within their organizations, and a majority of respondents report their levels of unstructured data are growing.

UK-based Ladybridge Systems is making the OpenQM MultiValue database software available on the Raspberry Pi computer. The Raspberry Pi computer launched in February 2012 by the Raspberry Pi Foundation is a credit card-sized computer with a price tag of under $35, featuring 512MB RAM, SD card data storage, two USB ports, high definition video and Ethernet connectivity. Primarily intended as an educational tool, enthusiasts have purchased these devices as fast as they can be manufactured, says Ladybridge. "Making OpenQM available on the Raspberry Pi is one element of a project to increase awareness of the MultiValue data model," says Martin Phillips, technical director of Ladybridge Systems.
