Leading storage vendors have recently added support for Symantec's industry standard Thin Reclamation AP, Symantec announced. The Symantec Thin Reclamation API enables automated space reclamation for thin-provisioning storage arrays, and is now supported by Symantec partners Compellent, EMC, Fujitsu, HP and NetApp, in addition to previously announced support from 3PAR, Hitachi Data Systems and IBM.

Veryant, a provider of COBOL modernization tools, announced a new release of its isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS) for developing, deploying, and modernizing COBOL applications. This is the vendor's sixth product update in two years. isCOBOL's value proposition, the vendor says, is offering users the ability to continue programming in COBOL, and at the same time, modernize and deploy applications across multiple platforms in an open Java framework.

SpringSource, a division of VMware, Inc. and provider of Java application management solutions, announced the acquisition by VMware of Rabbit Technologies, Ltd., an open source software company based in the United Kingdom. SpringSource will add the RabbitMQ open messaging system into its suite of technologies that are designed to reduce the complexity associated with development, deployment and management of enterprise applications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Greenplum Software, a data infrastructure company, has introduced what it calls the industry's first commercially available "Enterprise Data Cloud" platform. Called Greenplum Chorus, the solution offers self-service provisioning, data collaboration and data services features to complement traditional enterprise data warehouses. "Greenplum Chorus is a distributed software platform that is run on premises within an enterprise — potentially spanning multiple data centers and encompassing tens or hundreds of warehouses and marts," Ben Werther, director of product management for Greenplum, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The product is available under subscription or perpetual licensing models, Werther adds.

Holland Hospital, a 209-bed hospital in Western Michigan that is nationally recognized for quality practices and exceptional patient care, is implementing the InterSystems Ensemble rapid integration and development platform as its enterprise integration engine. Holland Hospital chose Ensemble to address several integration challenges such as the need to interconnect more systems across the hospital and to integrate with electronic medical record (EMR) systems at affiliated physician groups. Ensemble, which is used to develop and integrate mission-critical applications, leverage previous software investments through composite applications, and establish an enterprise service bus or SOA infrastructure, offered significant advantages over Holland Hospital's legacy integration platform.

Oracle today announced the latest release of its Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) System, Release 11.1.2. As part of the 11.1.2 release, there are three new applications: two in the financial close and financial reporting area, Oracle Hyperion Financial Close Management, Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management, and a third application that is a purpose-built planning module for public sector organizations called Oracle Hyperion Public Sector Planning and Budgeting, Hari Sankar, vice president of EPM Product Management, Oracle, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Oracle has announced AutoVue 20.0, the first release of the product planned from day-one under Oracle ownership. AutoVue joined Oracle as part of the Agile acquisition in 2007 and solves one central challenge, Thierry Bonfante, director product strategy for Oracle's AutoVue solutions, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "What we provide is a way to open any files, any documents that have been generated by any applications whether it is very simple applications like Microsoft Office or TIFF [Tagged Image File Format] or JPEG [Joint Photographic Experts Group] up to the very advanced 2D and 3D CADs [computer aided designs] that are used in aerospace and defense, construction, utilities, oil and gas."

Today Informatica Corporation announced the availability of a new independent research study entitled "Information, Unplugged: 2009 OAUG ResearchLine Survey on Enterprise Application Information Lifecycle Management." The report details the challenges IT is facing because of the surge in data flowing through today's enterprise applications and databases. "Inadequately managed data growth is fast becoming a problem of epic proportions, with some enterprise applications and databases increasing in size by as much as 50% a year," notes Adam Wilson, general manager, Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), Informatica.

Aton International, Inc., a mobile applications and embedded systems vendor, announced the release of a mobile application that provides data center administrators, system administrators and IT professionals a way to access data center servers such as System z and initiate mainframe modernization projects. Aton Connect for 3270 and 5250 accesses corporate data from IBM System z (mainframes using TN3270) and IBM System i (AS/400 using TN5250) servers. The mobile app works with a company's existing infrastructure to provide remote access to enterprise servers from a Windows Phone using time-tested terminal emulation secured with SSL or VPNs.

Oracle Corporation announced a new release of Tuxedo, an application server intended for rehosting mainframe-class C/C++ and COBOL applications in open or distributed system environments. The newly announced version, Oracle Tuxedo 11g, is designed to maintain a quality of service level comparable to an IBM mainframe system. Tuxedo - acquired as part of the BEA acquisition last year - is now considered part of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g.

IBM has announced availability for the first two models of its new line of System x servers. Called the eX5 line, this new portfolio is the result of a three-year IBM engineering effort to improve the economics of operating enterprise-sized, memory-intensive x86 workloads. Both are part of the eX5 portfolio, the next generation of x86-based systems from IBM that take advantage of unique IBM innovation to support large databases and virtualized environments.

In addition, the release also offers a dynamic, configurable GUI (graphical user interface), and provides updates for remote administration and advanced security options, as well as additional database support. Sybase has announced advanced spatial data functionality as part of the next release of its SQL Anywhere database and synchronization solution.
