According to the company, the new release combines NoSQL scalability with high-performance multi-key ACID (Atomic, Consistent, Isolated, Durable) transactions.

EMC has announced the next generation of its Disk Library for Mainframe (DLm) systems, designed to deliver twice the scalability of the previous generation, with support for up to 11.4 PB of logical capacity and up to 80% faster performance. EMC's DLm 8100 and DLm 2100 systems are enabled by an enhanced virtual tape engine and eight new Gb/s FICON adapters.

GT Software is shipping a new release in its Ivory Suite of products, providing SQL access to CA IDMS, a mainframe database. Ivory Data Hub v5.2.0 is designed to simplify SQL access to mainframe data, simplify problem diagnosis, and extend its integration into IBM's Workload Manager (WLM). SQL access to CA IDMS is important for a number of reasons, Eric Nelson, president of GT Software, told 5 Minute Briefing in an interview.

At last week's SHARE conference in Boston, AES announced Clever Mobile for Trace, designed to help administrators diagnose TCP/IP network traffic on mobile devices. Most corporate strategy definitions of a multi-architecture end-to-end environment include mobile phones. Functions available to users of browser interfaces, now must also be available as mobile applications, the company said.

Phoenix Software International plans to soon release an update to the company's mainframe software consumption measurement and analysis tool. The tool, zHISR 2.0, will interface directly with z/OS Hardware Instrumentation Services on IBM System z10 or zEnterprise processors to collect data for hotspot analysis of customer, vendor, or operating system program execution.

New additions to IBM's Flex System portfolio have been added, including new virtualization, networking and management tools. The offerings consist of three systems built on both IBM POWER7+ and a "double dense" x222 system built on x86 technology. IBM also said it has upgraded the Flex System Manager to enable users to monitor and manage up to 5,000 infrastructure end points and do so from any location using iOS, Android and Blackberry mobile devices.

IBM announced that it has teamed up with Google, Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan to form the OpenPOWER Consortium - an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture. The consortium intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers.

Pentaho Corporation, a provider of big data analytics and data integration software, has formed an alliance with Splunk Inc. to provide a big data analytics solution that enables business users to analyze machine data that is generated by websites, applications, servers, storage, network, mobile and other devices, including system sensors. As a result of the new alliance, Splunk customers will have the ability to use Pentaho's platform to do two things, said Eddie White, executive vice president, business development at Pentaho, in an interview.

NuoDB has announced the last release of its current product version and a technology preview of some upcoming second-generation features available later in 2013. The preview is contained in the free download of the new NuoDB Starlings Release 1.2. The NewSQL approach is gaining greater acceptance, said Barry Morris, founder and CEO of NuoDB, in an interview. "What people are saying back to us is that they are getting all of the features of NoSQL without throwing SQL or transactions away. And that concept is becoming the popular notion of what NewSQL is."

Progress Software announced availability of new data connectivity and application capabilities as part of its Progress Pacific application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) for building and managing business applications on any cloud, mobile or social platform. "Pacific is a platform running in the cloud that is targeted at small and medium-size businesses, ISVs and departmental IT," John Goodson, chief product officer at Progress Software, explained in an interview. Instead of requiring a highly trained IT staff to build applications, Goodson says, the platform provides a visual design paradigm that allows users with limited skills to build powerful applications that can quickly connect to any data sources.

SAP AG introduced new high availability and disaster recovery functionality with SAP Sybase Replication Server for SAP Business Suite software running on SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP Sybase ASE). "After only a year and a quarter supporting the Business Suite, ASE has already garnered about 2,000 customer installations. This easily provides that near zero-downtime for HA/DR that is non-intrusive to the system using Replication Server as the key enabling technology," said Dan Lahl, vice president, Database Product Marketing, SAP, in an interview.

IBM announced its new zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12) mainframe, designed for enhanced analytics, cloud, and mobile computing. Priced at $75,000 for the base model, IBM says it is targeting smaller organizations. The computer giant says it is also adding new industry solutions and software and operating systems across its zEnterprise portfolio, designed for financial services and government operations.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has signed an OEM reseller agreement with Infor, an ERP solutions provider. The agreement enables Infor to offer Attunity's mainframe data connectivity software to its customers using Infor E Series and M Series mainframe-based financials and payroll/personnel applications. IBM says it is accelerating its Linux on Power initiative with the new PowerLinux 7R4 server as well as new software and middleware applications geared for big data, analytics and next generation Java applications in an open cloud environment. According to IBM, the new PowerLinux 7R4 server, built on the same Power Systems platform running IBM's Watson cognitive computing solution, can provide clients the performance required for the new business-critical and data-intensive workloads increasingly being deployed in Linux environments. IBM is also expanding the portfolio of software for Power Systems with the availability of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and EnterpriseDB database software, each optimized for Linux on Power.

After four years of operating BigCouch in production, Cloudant has merged the BigCouch code back into the open source Apache CouchDB project. Cloudant provides a database-as-a-service and CouchDB serves as the foundation of Cloudant's technology. The company developed BigCouch, an open source variant of CouchDB, to support large-scale, globally distributed applications.There are three main reasons Cloudant is doing this, Adam Kocoloski, co-founder and CTO at Cloudant, told 5 Minute Briefing in an interview.

SAP has launched Sybase ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) 15.7 service pack 100 (SP100) to provide higher performance and scalability as well as improved monitoring and diagnostic capabilities for very large database environments. "The new release adds features in three areas to drive transactional environments to even more extreme levels.
