IBM has introduced new services and programs to help more companies migrate from Sun and HP servers to IBM's System z, particularly on the Linux platform. The goal of the new Server Consolidation and Migration Services offering is to help customers "lower their costs and get on to a world-class consolidation platform," Karl Freund, vice president of System z strategy in IBM's Systems and Technology group, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "If they are doing a fairly large-scale data center consolidation, and many outfits are especially in today's economy, this is the best way for them to go. They can save more money by putting it on z then on really any other platform." By replacing slow, manual methods with an automated solution, the Server Consolidation and Migration Services can reduce server consolidation and application migration efforts from months to weeks according to IBM.

With the hum of another "up" day taking place on the ground-floor trading level of the New York Stock Exchange at 11 Wall Street, Dr. Raj Nathan, Sybase senior vice president and chief marketing officer, gave the keynote address. At its recent TechEd conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft announced new innovations from the SQL Server team. The next release, SQL Server 2008 R2 (formerly SQL Server ‘Kilimanjaro'), is intended to empower end users to make better decisions through self-service business intelligence, and help IT drive greater efficiency and reduce costs through new capabilities such as multi-server management and Master Data Services. The first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of SQL Server 2008 R2 will be available in the second half of 2009 and Microsoft is on track to ship SQL Server 2008 R2 in the first half of calendar year 2010. In 2010, Microsoft will also introduce complex event processing for real-time insight into streaming information. This will offers customers and partners faster time to solution and equal or better performance than competitive alternatives to gain insight from streaming information.
