Skytap, a global, purpose-built cloud service, has announced that its support for the IBM i operating system is now available in US-West, US-Central, and EMEA-UK, broadening its support for IBM Power Systems-based applications that can be developed, tested and run in production.As clients enter the next chapter of their cloud journeys, they want the flexibility and choice to run their workloads across any environment, including on-premise, and in public and private clouds, said Harish Grama, general manager, IBM Cloud. The collaboration with Skytap enables IBM to combine the power of IBM Cloud with Skytap's portfolio, and this new support helps to provide additional choice and flexibility.

Days after closing its $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat, IBM announced that it has inked a multi-year strategic alliance that is said to be worth billions. IBM will be the primary developer and cloud provider for AT&T Business's operational applications and will help manage the AT&T Communications IT infrastructure, on and off-premise, and across different clouds, private and public.

Calling it a landmark acquisition, IBM and Red Hat announced today that they have closed the transaction under which IBM acquired all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Red Hat for $190 per share in cash, representing a total equity value of approximately $34 billion.

YugaByte, a provider of open source distributed SQL databases, announced that YugaByte DB is now 100% open source under the Apache 2.0 license, bringing previously commercial features into the open source core. The transition breaks the boundaries between YugaByte's Community and Enterprise editions by bringing previously commercial-only, closed-source features such as Distributed Backups, Data Encryption, and Read Replicas into the open source core project distributed under the permissive Apache 2.0 license.

Version 5.6 features new reports and log files that increase compliance visibility and awareness with a focus on GDPR, as well as improved usability and functionality of configuration settings. Separately, the company also announced the latest release of SQL Secure. Version 3.3 extends support for Microsoft SQL Server databases to include those deployed in Amazon RDS and EC2 cloud environments, as well as managed instances of Azure SQL Database.

According to Alluxio, a provider of open source data orchestration technology, the rise of compute-intensive workloads and the adoption of the cloud has driven organizations to adopt a decoupled architecture for modern workloads—one in which compute scales independently from storage. While this enables scaling elasticity, it also introduces new data engineering problems. Just as compute and containers need Kubernetes for container orchestration, Alluxio contends, data also needs orchestration—a tier that brings data locality, accessibility, and elasticity to compute across data silos, zones, regions, and clouds.

Google has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Elastifile, a provider of scalable, enterprise file storage for the cloud. The acquisition of Elastifile is expected to be completed later this year and is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals. Upon the close of the acquisition, Elastifile will join Google Cloud.

Compuware has introduced new zAdviser analytics to enable application development and delivery teams to make data-driven decisions that improve mainframe software quality, velocity, and efficiency. Compuware is also announcing expanded integration of ISPW and Git, the popular version control software. The integration helps developers with little mainframe experience work with mainframe source code. Changes in Git are automatically synchronized back into the mainframe where ISPW's automated build, deploy, and fallback capabilities can be leveraged in a CI/CD pipeline.

Oracle recently announced fiscal 2019 Q4 results and fiscal 2019 full year results. "In Q4, our non-GAAP operating income grew 7% in constant currency—which drove EPS well above the high end of my guidance," said Oracle CEO Safra Catz. "Our high-margin Fusion and NetSuite cloud applications businesses are growing rapidly, while we downsize our low-margin legacy hardware business. The net result of this shift away from commodity hardware to cloud applications was a Q4 non-GAAP operating margin of 47%, the highest we've seen in 5 years."

"This acquisition comes at a time when the Postgres market is exploding," said Ed Boyajian, president and CEO of EnterpriseDB.
