IBM's latest enterprise cloud offerings for the mainframe include the first System z-based integrated system offering, the IBM Enterprise Cloud System. There is also a new flexible utility pricing model to give service providers the ability to pay for Linux-based mainframe cloud infrastructure over time based on compute consumption, rather than system capacity.

Red Hat is collaborating with Google to enable Red Hat customers to move eligible Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions to Google Compute Engine using Red Hat Cloud Access. Google, which joined the Red Hat Certified Cloud Provider program in December 2013, is the second Red Hat Certified Cloud Provider to earn designation as a Red Hat Cloud Access-enabled partner.

SUSE has introduced the Starter System for System z to make SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 for System z installation quicker and easier. The system enables customers to do mainframe Linux proof-of-concepts with existing IT skills, according to the company.

Calypso Technology, Inc., an integrated capital markets platform provider, announced that Calypso version 14 has achieved Oracle Exadata Optimized status through Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN). According to Tej Sidhu, senior vice president for Engineering and CTO at Calypso Technology, in simulations of data-intensive straight through-processing tasks, Calypso achieved performance gains of up to 500% using Exadata hardware.

Oracle Engineered Server Systems achieved rapid growth during the third quarter of Oracle's fiscal year 2014. "Our Engineered Systems business is growing rapidly for the same fundamental reason that our cloud applications business is growing rapidly. In both cases, customers want us to integrated the hardware and software, and make it work together, so they don't have to," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, during the recent earnings conference call.

That's the message coming through from some security experts who estimate that there is a significant portion of business users who still have not moved off Windows XP, despite the fact that patches will no longer be issued. Users have been warned by Microsoft for years now that support for the more-than-decade-old operating system, as well as for Office 2003, would end on April 8, 2014.

SAP has officially announced Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 16, a major release of the company's RDBMS, as well as Replication Server, 15.7 SP200 which includes synchronous replication for HA/DR for SAP Business Suite on ASE. It has been 9 years since Sybase (acquired by SAP in 2010) announced ASE 15 in August 2005. With the new release, said Dan Lahl, SAP VP, Database & Technology Marketing, SAP is providing "the right system of record that is going to be able to handle the new world of transaction processing."
