Datameer has announced a new release of its big data analytics solution, which combines data integration, analytics and visualization of any data type in one application. The new capabilities offered in Datameer 2.0 are in two main categories, Joe Nicholson, vice president of marketing, Datameer, tells DBTA. Hyve Solutions, a division of SYNNEX Corporation has entered a software licensing agreement with IBM to offer IBM InfoSphere BigInsights software with its BigD family of systems hardware. The turnkey platform is intended to provide mid-market clients with an enterprise-class big data system to help them quickly deploy Hadoop-based analytics without the need for on-premise professional services or developers. DataStax, which offers products and services based on the open source NoSQL database Apache Cassandra, has launched DataStax Enterprise (DSE) 2.1, with increased capabilities for running a Hadoop cluster across multiple data centers, along with support for Mahout and Oracle Unbreakable Linux. The new release also adds enhancements to DataStax OpsCenter, a visual management and monitoring solution for big data platforms.

Kalido, a provider of agile information management software and Gold level member in Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), has achieved Oracle Exadata Optimized status, demonstrating that Kalido Information Engine 9.0 has been tested and tuned on Oracle Exadata Database Machine to deliver speed, scalability and reliability to customers. The new optimized status signifies that Kalido's application which is certified to run on Exadata has now been optimized, meaning that it is taking advantage of the features in Exadata, including the memory, and the tuning and performance capabilities, and that as a result, Kalido is able to give customers better performance of its application running on the Exadata stack, says Bill Hewitt, Kalido president and CEO.

Oracle has announced the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance, an integrated, high performance backup solution for Oracle engineered systems, including the Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle SPARC SuperCluster T4-4. According to Oracle, the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance delivers up to 20TB per hour full backup and up to 9.4TB per hour full restore throughputs, the fastest published recovery rates among general purpose storage systems for Oracle engineered systems data protection. Oracle's Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is available in two configurations, High Performance and High Capacity, and comes pre-racked and cabled, helping to eliminate hardware tuning.

QlikTech, a business intelligence software provider, has acquired Expressor Software, a Burlington, Massachusetts-based data management software company and QlikTech Qonnect partner. "Expressor fits squarely in our acquisition strategy. IBM stepped up its smarter computing initiative with a broad range of performance and efficiency enhancements to its storage and technical computing systems - the engines of big data. As part of its ongoing smarter computing effort, IBM has announced a new strategic approach to designing and managing storage infrastructures with greater automation and intelligence, as well as performance enhancements to several key storage systems and the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center suite. IBM also announced its first offerings that incorporate software from IBM's acquisition of Platform Computing earlier this year. Objectivity, a provider of object and graph databases, has formed new partnership deals and is also launching a program, now in beta, enabling partners, VARs, and integrators to get trained on utilizing InfiniteGraph and Objectivity/DB as part of their toolsets. According Objectivity, what separates its technology from other vendors is its ability to act as a federated connection store for disparate databases of all kinds from NoSQL to RDBMS. Despite IT industry talk about the need for real-time data, a new survey of more than 330 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications reveals that access to current data to support decision making is not actually possible for many companies. At least half of companies represented in the survey indicate that relevant data still takes 24 hours or longer to reach decision makers.

Sharon Shelton, vice president of marketing at Entrinsik, showcases Hawaii Human Resources (HiHR), a company using HRPyramid and Entrinsik Informer to help provide customized HR solutions to nearly 250 clients, in a new blog post this month on the Entrinsik website. Prior to purchasing Informer, HIHR was limited to the stock reports and unable to extract the specific data needed for internal and external reporting purposes, Shelton explains. But, since deploying Informer, HiHR has created almost 200 reports, including basic census, 401K reporting, and code file listings, and the company also makes heavy use of more advanced Informer functionality, such as Live Excel.

Unstructured data is on the rise, and ready to engulf current data management systems, a new survey shows. In addition, many corporate managers do not understand the challenge that is looming, and are failing to recognize the significance of unstructured data assets to the business. These are the findings of a newly released survey of 264 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications. The survey was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., in partnership with MarkLogic earlier this year.
