Red Hat, Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire ManageIQ for $104 million in cash. ManageIQ is a provider of enterprise cloud management and automation solutions that help organizations to deploy and manage private clouds, virtualized infrastructures and virtual desktops. With the addition of ManageIQ technologies to its portfolio, Red Hat says it will expand the reach of its hybrid cloud management solutions for enterprises.

EnterpriseDB, provider of Postgres products, Oracle database compatibility solutions, and add-on tools for PostgreSQL, has released Postgres Plus xDB Replication Server 5.0 with multi-master replication (MMR). By removing a single point of failure, MMR improves availability and enables DBAs to provide consistent and expanded access to near real-time data across geographically disparate data systems, while simultaneously allowing companies to control costs. "MMR allows each master database to stay in sync with one another so that if you change something in one database it would be updated in the other databases in almost real time," Keith Alsheimer, EnterpriseDB's head of marketing, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Enterprise NoSQL database provider MarkLogic Corporation has partnered with business intelligence vendor Tableau Software to offer analytics and visualization over unstructured big data. The partnership allows business users to leverage Tableau's business intelligence and reporting solutions to access disparate data sets of structured and unstructured data house in a MarkLogic NoSQL database. "Not only can you build rich, sophisticated applications, but you can also make use of that data where it is, and have business users connect to that data, visualize it, and do analytics over it, without involving the development center," Stephen Buxton, MarkLogic's director of product management, tells DBTA.

Idera, a provider of application and server management solutions, is making available two new tools that monitor the health of SQL Server databases and maximize DBA's efforts. Idera SQL backup status reporter and SQL fragmentation analyzer are intended to help DBAs to save time and money by reporting on database backup operations and detecting fragmentation levels across the SQL Server environment so that they can gain clear insight in order to optimize productivity.

Splunk, a provider of real-time operational intelligence software is offering new software development kits (SDKs) for Java and Python to make it easier for application developers to customize Splunk Enterprise, enabling real-time big data insights across the organization. Splunk previously released the GA version of the Splunk SDK for JavaScript for Splunk Enterprise 5, and a Splunk SDK for PHP is in public preview. "It is the idea of enabling the entire organization with the insights, the machine data, the big data insights that IT traditionally has gotten out of Splunk - and bringing those same insights to marketing, to sales, to customer service, and other divisions and other organizations to break the stovepipe of traditional enterprise. We feel that developers and the developer platform is the key to doing that," Jon Rooney, director of developer marketing at Splunk, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire StoredIQ Inc., a privately held company based in Austin, Texas. IBM says StoredIQ will advance its efforts to help clients derive value from big data and respond more efficiently to litigation and regulations, dispose of information that has outlived its purpose and lower data storage costs. The acquisition is about "information economics," Ken Bisconti, VP of ECM Marketing, IBM, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "It is really about managing the value of content and information, and helping also to dispose of it defensibly as it becomes of less value."

Oracle has agreed to acquire Eloqua, Inc, a provider of cloud-based marketing automation and revenue performance management software for $23.50 per share or approximately $871 million, net of Eloqua's cash. "Eloqua's leading marketing automation cloud will become the centerpiece of the Oracle Marketing Cloud and is an important addition to the Oracle Customer Experience offering, which includes the Oracle Sales Cloud, Oracle Commerce Cloud, Oracle Service Cloud, Oracle Content Cloud and Oracle Social Cloud," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, Oracle Development. The board of directors of Eloqua has unanimously approved the transaction, which is expected to close in the first half of 2013, subject to Eloqua stockholder approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Oracle has announced the release of Oracle NoSQL Database 2.0, an enterprise-grade, key-value database for real-time big data workloads. The new release adds efficient support for storage and retrieval of large objects such as documents and images, tighter integration with both Oracle Database and Hadoop environments, as well as dynamic elasticity and automatic rebalancing for allocating storage and compute resources in response to changing production data processing requirements.

To improve quality and time to market for new features in the U2 product line, going forward, Rocket U2 will have two separate development labs: U2 Database Servers and U2 Tools, according to Susie Siegesmund, vice president and general manager, Rocket Software. Each lab will comprise development, QA, product management, information development and support, and from a customer perspective, there will be little, if any, change. NoSQL database vendor Couchbase has introduced a new release of the company's flagship NoSQL database offering. Couchbase Server 2.0 adds a flexible document data model that allows developers to quickly build and modify web and mobile applications without the restrictions of relational database schemas. In addition, the company says, Couchbase Server 2.0 features consistent high performance, easy scalability, and always-on capabilities for rapid response times and uninterrupted data availability for business-critical web and mobile applications.

Cloudant has joined the Cloud Tools program for Rackspace Hosting and also has announced the immediate availability of its NoSQL database-as-a-service (DBaaS) for web and mobile applications across the global Rackspace open cloud. This collaboration is intended to enable developers using Rackspace open cloud to benefit from Cloudant as an application data layer that scales up or down on-demand through a management interface.

The University of Minnesota, a top research institution comprised of five campuses, 65,000 students and 25,000 employees, has made systematic changes and improved database administration efficiency with Oracle Exadata Database Machine. By hosting its IT environment on two Oracle Exadata Database Machine half racks, the university consolidated more than 200 Oracle database instances into fewer than 20, enabling it to reduce data center floor space and total cost of ownership.

The latest IOUG study on database security finds that there are measures that need to be taken to safeguard data from internal abuse; however, preventing privileged users from negligence or malfeasance is a serious challenge. According to this year's study, human error has beat out internal hackers or unauthorized users as the biggest security risk. In addition, more than half of respondents say their organizations still do not have, or are unaware of, data security plans to help address contingencies as they arise. These enterprise data security challenges, and more, are highlighted in a new survey of 350 data managers and professionals by the Independent Oracle Users Group. Underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., it covered progress within three key areas of database security - prevention, detection, and administration.

Xerox and Cisco have announced a collaboration in which Xerox will employ Cisco's Unified Computing System to deliver its cloud based managed print services (MPS) offering. Cisco reports that its system supports hundreds of thousands of transactions per second on behalf of Xerox. "By using Cisco UCS to support our global MPS delivery network, we can quickly respond to the changing needs of our customers and offer them simplified data, new applications, and faster service," says Andrew Morrison, senior vice president for Xerox MPS Business.

Oracle is planning a new event series called Oracle CloudWorld which is aimed at allowing senior Oracle executives, customers, partners and industry thought leaders to share how they drive business transformation using the Oracle Cloud. The debut of Oracle CloudWorld follows the expansion of the Oracle Cloud services portfolio at Oracle OpenWorld 2012. Oracle president Mark Hurd will kick off Oracle CloudWorld on January 15, 2013 in Dubai.

Oracle Sun Storage Archive Manager 5.3 and Sun QFS 5.3 have been released, providing customers with end to end data integrity so that they can simplify and shorten the process of verifying their digital archives are uncorrupted and accessible. When used with Oracle's StorageTek T10000C Tape Drives, a command from SAM-QFS initiates data verification within the tape drive itself, with no need to transfer the data back to the server.

Actian Corporation and Versant Corporation, both real-time information management software providers, have announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement through which Actian will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of Versant for $13 per share in cash for a purchase price of approximately $37 million. Versant's board of directors unanimously approved the Actian acquisition agreement.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has officially launched Attunity CloudBeam, a fully-managed data transfer SaaS platform for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage Service (S3). With its beta completed, the high-performance data transfer solution was unveiled and demonstrated live at the AWS re: Invent Customer and Partner Conference from in Las Vegas, NV. Enterprise NoSQL vendor MarkLogic recently brought its summit series to New York. Themed as "Big Data, Beyond the Hype: Delivering Results," the one-day conference included presentations by MarkLogic executives as well as partners and customers. In his opening keynote, CEO Gary Bloom highlighted the need for a next-generation database to address the problems and opportunities posed by big data, while also cautioning that there are "a lot of shiny objects" in the market now trying to capture people's attention that may not deliver the necessary results.

Voltage Security, a provider of encryption and key management solutions, has announced a partnership with data integration software provider Informatica to deliver seamless integration of Voltage's data-centric security platform Voltage SecureData with Informatica's data masking software. The integration is aimed at providing protection across the entire application development lifecycle, from creation to production to application retirement. The solution is expected to lower the cost of protecting data in production and non-production environments through a combination of encryption, tokenization and masking capabilities. "We are known as the inventors of format-preserving encryption and that is part and parcel of why Informatica is working with us. Amazon Web Services Inc. has announced the limited preview of Amazon Redshift, a managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud, which aims to enable customers to increase the speed of query performance when analyzing data sets using the same SQL-based BI tools they use today. SAP is planning to deliver six new SAP mobile apps for Windows 8. SAP also announced forthcoming support for Windows 8 development on the SAP Mobile Platform as well as security enhancements to the SAP Afaria mobile device management solution. Through these apps, platform support and security enhancements, SAP said it intends to extend business processes to Windows 8 to accelerate a business' ability to run better with devices of various form factors. The announcements were made at SAPPHIRE NOW + SAP TechEd in Madrid.
