VMware, Inc., a provider of enterprise virtualization solutions, is shipping an updated release of its application monitoring product that includes tighter integration with its virtualization server products. The new release, SpringSource Hyperic 4.4, is integration with VMware vCenter Server, and now maintains a continually updated inventory of VMware vSphere ESXi and ESX hosts, the vendor says.

Continuity Software, a provider of disaster recovery (DR) and high availability (HA) management solutions, has announced the general availability of RecoverGuard version 5.2 (v5.2), featuring a Private Cloud Advisor designed to enable customers to ensure availability, recoverability and adherence to industry best practices in the private cloud. Today, Sybase, Inc., an SAP company, also announced a new HP-Sybase BI (business intelligence) reference architecture that leverages the HP Converged Infrastructure. The joint solution optimizes query response and data loads with reduced overhead, storage costs and maintenance requirements. Featuring Sybase IQ 15 running on HP ProLiant DL785 servers, Sybase says the solution will help organizations looking for high performance, scalability and energy efficiency at a lower TCO than other analytics server offerings.

IBM today announced the acquisition of Datacap Inc., a privately-held company based in Tarrytown, N.Y. Datacap is a provider of software that enables organizations to improve the way they capture, manage and automate the flow of business information to improve business processes, reduce paper costs or manual errors and meet compliance mandates. "We've chosen to make Datacap's approach the foundation of IBM's document capture strategy. Datacap's approach to image capture, using sophisticated business rules management, sets it above the rest in the industry and provides the most complementary capabilities for IBM," states Ron Ercanbrack, vice president of Enterprise Content Management for IBM.

Bus-Tech, Inc., a supplier of data center connectivity products, announced enhancements to its virtual tape library (VTL) solution for small to medium mainframe environments. The company unveiled Mainframe Data Library (MDL) model 100S, part of a modular, scalable family of VTL controllers for IBM, IBM compatible and Fujitsu mainframes. The MDL-100S offers self-contained storage and multiple data protection options. With the release of the MDL-100S, storage capacity has been doubled to 9 TB of usable RAID storage.

Terracotta, a provider of enterprise scalability solutions, says it is shipping a new release of its distributed caching solution that enables customers to store over a terabyte of data and hundreds of millions of entries in a single cache. The new product, Ehcache 2.2, also features a new management console intended to simplify application scale and enhance visibility and control for developers and operators. Terracotta claims these new capabilities can be turned on with two lines of configuration.

HP announced its Flexible Data Center (HP Flexible DC), a prefabricated, modular framework built to replace traditional data center designs with a more agile solution that can be expanded as needed while conserving resources.HP Flexible DC is based on a "butterfly" design featuring four prefabricated quadrants, or modules, that stem off a central administrative section. The offering uses industrial components to improve cost efficiencies as well as a streamlined building process with a variety of options for power and cooling distribution."HP can help clients innovate the way they build and operate a greenfield data center for greater savings over its life span," says Kfir Godrich, chief technology officer of technology services at HP. Likely adopters of the offering include financial service providers, government entities, and cloud and co-location hosts, Godrich adds.In addition, HP says it is offering specific configurations designed to optimize the use of power and cooling resources to lower energy and water use. Unisys recently reported second-quarter 2010 net income of $120.2 million, compared with net income of $38.1 million in the year-ago quarter. "This was another solid quarter for the company as we continued to make progress in enhancing our profitability and reshaping our business model at Unisys. By staying focused on our business priorities we delivered our fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year improved profitability," said Ed Coleman, Unisys chairman and CEO, during the company's Q2 earnings conference call late last month.

TravelSky, the leading provider of information technology solutions for China's air travel and tourism industry and a Unisys client for more than 25 years, has renewed its commitment to Unisys services and server technology in a major contract with Unisys China to support the transaction peaks driven by China's growing aviation sector. The $43-million deal, signed in the first quarter of 2010, includes the Unisys USAS Passenger Services Solution, two ClearPath Dorado Model 790 mainframes, additional metered processing capacity, infrastructure management suite and maintenance services, clustering hardware and EMC storage solutions. In addition, Unisys is assisting TravelSky to implement a private cloud computing solution designed to provide improved automation, self diagnostics, server utilization, compliance and ease of management within the data center.

Unisys has introduced the first in a planned series of managed cloud solutions for its ClearPath family of mainframe servers. ClearPath Cloud Development and Test Solution is a "platform as a service" (PaaS) solution that is intended to extend Unisys' strategy for delivering secure IT services in the cloud and to set the stage for delivery of further ClearPath Cloud solutions. According to Unisys, in its recent online poll, 46% of respondents - the largest single percentage response to any question in the poll - cited development and test environments as the first workloads they would consider moving to the cloud.

Confio Software which offers Ignite 8 performance analysis software, has unveiled IgniteFree, which the company describes as the only free response-time database performance analysis tool. IgniteFree is carved from Ignite 8's primary feature set and gives DBAs a point-in-time view of bottlenecks in their database. IgniteFree for Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase and DB2/LUW can be downloaded from Confio at no cost. "We have taken the core feature of Ignite - which is the response time monitoring - and we have packaged it in a free version so that you get all the response time information for real time monitoring for the past hour at no cost," says Don Bergal, chief operating officer of Confio.

Extending its leadership in the enterprise tape market, Oracle announced high availability and capacity enhancements to its StorageTek tape libraries and drives. New features of the StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System include an increase in scalable capacity from 70,000 to 100,000 tape slots and redundant electronics to help customers manage growth, increase availability and reduce risk. "Being able to scale to 150 petabytes with up to 100,000 tape slots under the management of a single library is a significant advantage for customers who are dealing with explosive data growth, as many companies are today," Tom Wultich, director of product management for tape at Oracle, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Revelation Software has announced the availability of a new release of OpenInsight (OI) Development Suite. The 9.2 release includes the SQL Connector, which allows SQL tables in relational database management systems including Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL, to be seen as native tables to all components of OpenInsight, including forms, reports, popups, stored procedures and O4W. "What we have done is built intelligence into the connector so that programmers that have been doing work, not just in OpenInsight, but any flavor of MultiValue, can now use that same knowledge base that they have, and go against data that used to be fairly difficult for them to get at," Mike Ruane, president and CEO of Revelation Software, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Storwize, a privately held company based in Marlborough, Mass. With Storwize, IBM says, it is acquiring storage technology that is unique in the industry due to its ability to compress primary data, or data that clients are actively using, of multiple types - from files to virtualization images to databases - in real-time while maintaining performance. "This is in contrast to what we see our competitors doing, which is primarily focusing on compressing data that is inactive, or data at rest - backup data, as an example," explained Doug Balog, vice president of IBM Storage, during a conference call announcing the planned acquisition.

SAP AG has announced the completion of the cash tender offer for all outstanding shares of common stock of Sybase, Inc., by Sheffield Acquisition Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAP, which expired at 9:00 p.m., New York City time on Monday, July 26, 2010. American Stock Transfer & Trust Company, LLC, the depositary for the tender offer, has indicated that, as of the expiration of the tender offer 80,929,717 shares of common stock of Sybase had been tendered into and not properly withdrawn from the tender offer (including 9,293,901 shares of common stock tendered pursuant to the guaranteed delivery procedures). These shares represent approximately 92.1% of Sybase's outstanding shares of common stock, or 91.8% on a fully diluted basis. All Sybase shares that were validly tendered into the offer and not properly withdrawn have been accepted for payment.

Sybase has reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2010. Total revenue for the second quarter of 2010 grew 9% to $302.0 million, compared to $278.0 million in the second quarter of 2009. License revenue grew 6% to $100.1 million, compared to $94.1 million in the second quarter of 2009, services revenue grew 5% to $147.2 million, and messaging revenue grew 24% to $54.8 million in the second quarter of 2010.

Sybase has announced the availability of its SQL Anywhere 12 database and synchronization solution. A core component of the Sybase Mobility Platform, SQL Anywhere is optimized for mission-critical database applications running outside traditional data center environments requiring little or no onsite IT support. Quest Software, Inc. has introduced a beta program for Toad for Cloud Databases, a new data access and management tool for non-relational data stored in cloud databases, also known as NoSQL databases. Toad for Cloud Databases is intended to help users unlock data stored in the cloud by using the familiar SQL language or Toad's popular visual query and data access capabilities. Users can query and report on non-relational data, migrate data in both cloud and relational databases from one to the other, and create queries that combine the two.

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), the world's largest user knowledgebase for Oracle Applications users, announced that it has released the results of an OAUG ResearchLine study that focused on performance management solutions and methodologies. The study, conducted by Unisphere Research and sponsored by IBM Cognos, is based on the results of a survey completed by members of the OAUG.
