Panorama Software, a provider of proactive Business Intelligence (BI) solutions, has announced its plans for the next release of its flagship product suite NovaView. Panorama's next release will extend its Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services support to natively support Microsoft's new PowerPivot technology (formerly known as Project Gemini). SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is Microsoft's online analytical processing (OLAP) technology, and PowerPivot is the name for Microsoft's next major update to SSAS.

IBM announced new solutions for developers to create and deliver software in both public and private cloud environments. The offerings include application lifecycle management and software delivery tools from IBM Rational, as well as new services.

IBM announced what its says is the world's largest private cloud computing environment for business analytics, supporting more than a petabyte of information, or the equivalent to 20 million four-drawer filing cabinets filled with text, which stacked end-to-end would circle the entire planet. The analytics cloud will be made available for both internal IBM use and as services for customers. The internal deployment for IBM employees is called Blue Insight, while the customer offering—based on a similar architecture—is called IBM Smart Analytics.

HP and 3Com announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase 3Com, a provider of networking switching, routing and security solutions, at a price of approximately $2.7 billion. The terms of the transaction have been approved by the HP and 3Com boards of directors.

The UNITE 2009 conference, themed "Invigorate Your Data Center," concludes today in Minneapolis. "People come to the conference because we just have incredibly good content; we have presenters both from Unisys and from the user community," Marian Ritland, vice chairman of the UNITE board, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "We had really good sessions and got lots of good comments about the sessions." Virtually all of the vendors signed up for the new show next year which will be in San Antonio, she adds. Like many other conferences this year, attendance at UNITE was down a bit due to the economy—by 20% this year over last, Ritland says.

Unisys also announced enhancements, including a disaster recovery service, to Unisys Secure Cloud Solution, the company's managed public cloud offering.

Unisys announced at the Microsoft TechEd Europe conference that it is providing multiple services-based solutions for the new Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environments. The solutions include data center transformation solutions, as well as end-user services and a unified communications service that Unisys is hosting for Microsoft Corp.

The Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) announced its new executive committee for the 2010/2011 term at the PASS Summit last week in Seattle. Rushabh Mehta, managing director at Solid Quality Mentors, will become president; Bill Graziano, owner of scaleSQL Consulting, is taking on the executive vice president, finance, role; and Rick Heiges, senior solutions consultant with Scalability Experts, is joining as vice president, marketing. The new PASS Executive Committee will begin serving its term on January 1, 2010.

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), the world's largest user knowledgebase for Oracle Applications users, announced the organization's membership has selected its 2010 board of directors. The new board members are John Stouffer, an individual associate member; Floyd M. Teter, system engineer, Technology and Standards Office for Institutional Business Systems at the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Margaret Wright, technology manager for the Oracle Center of Excellence at Atlanta's Southern Company.

Oracle issued a statement Monday that its acquisition of Sun is essential for competition in the high-end server market, for revitalizing Sparc and Solaris and for strengthening the Java development platform. The company also said it plans to "vigorously oppose" the European Commission's Statement of Objections and that the evidence against the Commission's position is "overwhelming."

Crosscheck Networks, Inc., a provider of web services testing, simulation and security, announced the latest release of SOAPSonar (version 5.0), designed to enable enterprises to test functional and performance characteristics of unlimited-sized Web services attachments via streaming of structured and unstructured data based on industry standards such as MTOM and MIME. Crosscheck says this is the first product of its kind with this capability.

Aster Data, a provider of data warehousing solutions for "big data" applications, yesterday announced Aster Data Version 4.0, which the company describes as the industry's first "Massively Parallel Data-Application Server." Aster Data 4.0 allows companies to embed applications inside Aster Data's MPP (massively parallel processing) data warehouse, so businesses can now store, analyze and speed processing of terabytes to petabytes of data. The ability to push applications down into the MPP database also opens a new opportunity for companies to deliver new interactive, big data applications.

Novell announced the latest release of its data center workload profiling, analysis and planning tool. The product, PlateSpin Recon 3.7, combines consolidation planning with capacity management to give customers an ongoing view of their physical and virtual infrastructure. With this latest version, Novell says it has expanded PlateSpin Recon's resource analysis to include granular detail on current, historical, and expected future consumption of local and remote storage resources.

Sybase, Inc. last week reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2009. "The team continued to execute very well and enabled us to deliver our best-ever third quarter results in the company history," John Chen, chairman, CEO and president of Sybase, said during an earnings call announcing the results. The company achieved third quarter records in total revenue, operating income, operating margin, net income, EPS, and cash flow from operations.

Talend, an open source data integration software company, recently announced a significant upgrade to the Talend Integration Suite and to Talend Open Studio. Talend Open Studio is the free, open source ETL software platform that Talend offers under a GPL license. It provides business modeling of the data integration process, graphical development, metadata management, and a wide array of data connectors. Talend Integration Suite is the commercial version of Open Studio that Talend sells as an annual subscription license, and that extends Talend Open Studio with technical support and features to facilitate the work of large teams and enterprise-scale deployments. It is offered as Team, Professional, or Enterprise editions, with the Enterprise edition providing for grid management and optional data quality capabilities.

Melissa Data, a provider of data quality and address management solutions, has announced a new free add-on to the company's Address Object address verification API and MAILERS+4 postal automation software. The new add-on, called AddressPlus, will analyze residential address records that are identified during ZIP+4 encoding and will append or correct those records with the right apartment number, if available.

IBM is introducing new software for managing data centers, which, according to the company, has the potential to cut the cost of operations while speeding the deployment of new applications from weeks to minutes. IBM's VMControl is intended to help companies that have turned to virtualization to reduce infrastructure costs, but have actually wound up with new challenges as they try to manage enterprises made up of disparate platforms, each with their own virtualization technology.
