EMC is acquiring DSSD, Inc., a developer of rack-scale flash storage architecture for I/O-intensive in-memory databases and big data workloads. DSSD is complementary to EMC's all-flash and hybrid storage portfolio, and will support the emerging tier of next-generation in-memory and big data workloads, according to David Goulden, CEO of EMC Information Infrastructure.

Ariba, an SAP company that provides cloud-based procurement solutions, is moving to SAP HANA, the company's in-memory platform for real-time computing. The initial step, involving the transition of Ariba Spend Visibility has been completed and the company is now shifting the Ariba Network to the platform. "We have been running cloud operations here for 15 years at Ariba, and we have a mature cloud platform, said SAP Ariba engineering vice president Mark Dao.

At an event in NYC, Oracle president Mark Hurd and EVP John Fowler unveiled Solaris 11.2, which represents an evolution from operating system to a complete platform, they said. The phenomena of cloud and engineered systems are driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently, observed Hurd, who asked, "Who really wants to glue an operating system to a server?"

It was a tough first quarter for IBM, including soft mainframe sales. Overall, the company saw first quarter revenues of $22.5 billion, down 4% from the first quarter of 2013. Net income was $2.4 billion, down 21% year-to-year.
