Oracle yesterday announced that Mark V. Hurd has joined Oracle as president and has been named to Oracle's board of directors. Hurd will report to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. "Mark did a brilliant job at HP and I expect he'll do even better at Oracle," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, in a statement commenting on Hurd's hire. "There is no executive in the IT world with more relevant experience than Mark. Oracle's future is engineering complete and integrated hardware and software systems for the enterprise. Mark pioneered the integration of hardware with software when Teradata was a part of NCR."

Quest Software, Inc. announced today that it has added Apache Cassandra, an open source NoSQL database, to its list of supported NoSQL platforms with the second beta release of Toad for Cloud Databases. Toad now supports data access and management for Apache Cassandra, Amazon SimpleDB, Microsoft Azure Table Services, Apache HBase, and any open database connectivity-enabled relational database.

EnterpriseDB, which provides products, services, support and training based on the PostgreSQL open source database project, has received a strategic investment from KT (formerly Korea Telecom) and has accepted venture capital funding from new investment partner TransLink Capital. EnterpriseDB says the new funding will enable it to expand its product and marketing operations to capitalize on the upheaval in the database market caused by consolidation and an enterprise platform shift to virtualized and cloud infrastructure.

Unisys has announced that, together with Unisystems SA, its business partner in Greece since 1964, it has won a contract from Alpha Bank for purchase of two new Unisys ClearPath Dorado 790 Series mainframe servers and renewal of a software licensing agreement to upgrade Alpha Bank's existing systems. These actions are part of Alpha Bank's initiative to modernize and expand its core banking system. HP also announced that it has acquired Stratavia, a privately held database and application automation company based in Denver. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to HP, the acquisition of Stratavia will strengthen the HP Software and Solutions portfolio, adding deployment, configuration and management solutions for enterprise databases, middleware and packaged applications. The solutions will help clients simplify application deployment and management in hybrid IT environments, which consist of on-premise, off-premise, physical and virtual environments.

At VMworld, Precise unveiled Precise for Cloud, a transaction performance management solution designed to ensure quality of service (QoS) for applications running on private cloud platforms at the Global 5000 and their global ISPs. Translattice, a predictive data software startup, has announced a cloud-based computing infrastructure designed to anticipate application and data needs based on policy, usage and geography. Translattice offers data delivery across the network, supported by infrastructure components such as load balancing, application run times, and relational storage that reside on identical, deployed nodes. Capacity and scalability are increased by adding nodes, which may be deployed on-premise, in the cloud, or a combination of both. If a site becomes unreachable due to an outage, geographic redundancy preserves the availability of applications and data, the vendor says.

IBM announced a new storage-aware backup and recovery solution that integrates storage processor fast-replication facilities with IMS backup and recovery operations. The new tool, IBM says, enables instantaneous backups with no application downtime, reduce recovery time, and simplify disaster recovery procedures while using less CPU, I/O, and storage resources. The IMS Recovery Expert for z/OS V2.1 product is intended to make disaster recovery as simple as restarting from a power failure, while reducing the costs and complexity of backing up and recovering IMS assets.
