Sanbolic says it is now shipping software that delivers distributed scale-out, high-availability, and enterprise data services incorporating server-side flash. Server-side flash has seen rapid adoption for applications such as hyper-scale web serving, but limited adoption in general-purpose enterprise applications. Sanbolic's new product, Melio5, seeks to change that, enabling enterprise customers to adopt server-side Flash, SSD and HDD as primary persistent storage.

The Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) will celebrate its 20th anniversary at COLLABORATE 13, a conference on Oracle technology presented jointly by the IOUG, OAUG (Oracle Applications User Group) and the Quest International User Group. The event will be held April 7 to 11 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. As part of the conference, the IOUG will host the COLLABORATE 13-IOUG Forum with nearly 1,000 sessions providing user-driven content. The theme of this year's COLLABORATE 13-IOUG Forum is "Elevate - take control of your career and elevate your Oracle ecosystem knowledge and expertise," says IOUG president John Matelski.

IBM announced that all cloud services and software will be based on an open cloud architecture. As the first step, IBM unveiled a new private cloud offering based on the open sourced OpenStack software that it says speeds and simplifies managing an enterprise-grade cloud. The offering provides businesses with a core set of open source-based technologies to build enterprise-class cloud services that can be ported across hybrid cloud environments. The IBM announcement "goes a long way" to position OpenStack against other more proprietary solutions, Jim Curry, senior vice president and general manager of Rackspace's Private Cloud business, tells DBTA.

At the recent Strata conference, CitusDB showcased the latest release of its scalable analytics database. According to the vendor, CitusDB 2.0 brings together the performance of PostgreSQL and the scalability of Apache Hadoop, and enables real-time queries on data that's already in Hadoop. This new functionality is possible with CitusDB's distributed query planner, and PostgreSQL's foreign data wrappers.

In-memory technology provider Terracotta, Inc. has announced that javax.cache, a caching standard for Java applications, has entered Draft Review Stage under the Java Community Process. The Oracle Linux team has announced the availability of Oracle Linux 6.4, the fourth update release for Oracle Linux 6. The individual RPM packages have already been published from the public yum repository and ISO images will be available from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud. The new release includes new features and improvements, including, most importantly, a new version of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.

A new survey of nearly 200 data managers and professionals, who are part of the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), looks at the role of the data scientist - data professionals who can aggregate data from internal enterprise data stores as well as outside sources to provide the forecasts and insight required to help lead their organizations into the future. Big data analytics provider Pentaho has announced new templates for Instaview, its big data discovery application, simplifying access to and analysis of big data sources. Templates help solve the data integration challenge in gaining value from big data. Pentaho has released a Twitter template and will release templates for MongoDB, Amazon Redshift, Google Analytics and Cloudera Impala on a weekly basis for download from the Pentaho site.

Rackspace Hosting has acquired ObjectRocket, a MongoDB database as a service (DBaaS) provider. Through the acquisition, Rackspace says it will broaden its OpenStack-based open cloud platform to provide a NoSQL DBaaS, and establish a strong presence within the high-growth NoSQL database market.

Oracle has posted the certification of the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 on the IBM System z platform, Red Hat announced. The certification of Oracle 11gR2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 for IBM System z allows Red Hat, Oracle, and IBM to extend the ecosystems they are able to support and provide to their customers, offering them a full range of options for their enterprise software needs.

Cisco introduced a wave of data product announcements covering a wide spectrum of needs within data center and cloud environments. New products include Cisco Nexus 6000 Series Switches, a high-density 40 Gigabit Layer2/Layer 3 fixed switch, and Cisco Nexus 1000V InterCloud for connecting private enterprise and service provider clouds. The vendor also says it is shipping a network- programmable controller as part of the expanded Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) portfolio.

Enterprise NoSQL database provider MarkLogic is making available a free developer license for MarkLogic Enterprise Edition. The developer license provides access to MarkLogic Enterprise Edition features such as integrated search, government-grade security, clustering, replication, failover, alerting, geospatial indexing, conversion, as well as a set of application development tools. MarkLogic also said it is making available a Java-based tool for importing data from MongoDB into MarkLogic.

Garantia Data has announced the general availability of its Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud database hosting services. According to the vendor, these are fully-automated, in-memory NoSQL cloud services offering Memcached and Redis data store systems. With pay-as-you-go pricing, Garantia Data charges users according to the size of their datasets rather than by cloud instances to avoid over-provisioning of RAM resources and allow users to pay for what they actually consume.

IBM has introduced entry-level and midrange Power Systems based on its recently introduced POWER7+ processors. The new systems are optimized for IBM's analytics software including Cognos and SPSS, and use underlying technologies from the Watson system including POWER processors and big data analytics.
