Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has signed a distribution partnership agreement with Tokyo-based Insight Technology Inc. (ITI). The reseller agreement provides ITI the rights to distribute Attunity's data replication solutions in Japan, together with ITI's database machine "Insight Qube." "The partnership with Attunity is an important and strategic one for ITI," says Ichiro Obata, CEO at Insight Technology, Inc. "The key reason is big data. Cloud operating system provider Nimbula has unveiled its elastic Hadoop solution with MapR Technologies, allowing users to run their Hadoop clusters on private clouds. The elasticity and multi-tenancy of Nimbula Director paired with the dependability and security of MapR Hadoop Distribution allows for a fully-functional and highly-available Hadoop cluster on a single pool of infrastructure. Data warehousing is undergoing the most radical transformation seen since it was first conceived in the 1970s, and brought to market in the late 1980s and 1990s. One reason for this transformation is that data warehouses are on the front lines of the big data explosion. Findings from a new survey of IOUG members indicate that while most companies have well-established data warehouse systems, adoption is still limited within their organizations. This survey, underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., included input from 421 data managers and professionals.

According to Oracle, customers in 43 countries across 22 industries have already adopted Oracle Exalogic, and it is the fastest growing Oracle engineered system with 3x Y/Y sales bookings based on the last two quarters of FY 2012. The second generation of Exalogic is raising the bar even further, with a single integrated system that addresses the key business goals of application owners - to seize market opportunities, lower business risk and reduce cost and complexity, noted Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president for product development at Oracle, who spoke during a webcast presentation to launch the new release.

Big data and cloud analytics vendor Kognitio has partnered with Xtremeinsights, a provider of solutions for leveraging Hadoop in existing data management systems. Together, the partners aim to deliver software and integration technologies to businesses that want to leverage the Hadoop platform and gain actionable insights from their big data. Using its in-memory analytical platform, Kognitio speeds up the analysis of data from Hadoop clusters, enabling ad hoc, real-time analytics at a significantly lower cost. EMC has introduced a high-end virtual tape library product for large enterprise mainframe environments. The new tape library has two unique enhancements, Jim O'Connor, senior marketing manager for backup and recovery systems at EMC, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It is the first mainframe virtual tape library to provide synchronous replication for the DR site, he says, and in addition, the DLm8000 uses EMC VMAX enterprise storage and supports Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) replication, making it ideal for large, transaction-oriented enterprises such as banks and brokerage houses that have stringent RTOs due to regulatory requirements.

Oracle announced a new release of its mainframe rehosting platform, now optimized for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, that it says is capable of delivering up to 8x performance gains for rehosted IBM CICS and IMS applications. The platform is intended to help customers reduce mainframe IT costs by rehosting larger-scale mainframe applications more rapidly and running them more efficiently on traditional Linux or Unix servers, engineered systems, and in enterprise clouds.

"Since we have the ability to pre-position the data close to end users and have a node that's operating on their behalf in distributed queries, we can offer a much higher level of user experience than conventional systems," Michael Lyle, CTO of TransLattice, explains to DBTA. SAP AG introduced a new solution to help organizations gain real-time insights into market trends and customer sentiment. The SAP rapid-deployment solution for sentiment intelligence with SAP HANA is intended to allow users to analyze customer sentiment from social networking sites, communities, wikis, blogs and other sources, and combine the information with CRM data. Customers that have had success getting started with big data analytics are the ones that have set out to solve a very specific use case or set out to solve a specific problem, David Jonker, director of marketing for database and technology at SAP, tells DBTA. Pentaho's Business Analytics 4.5 is now certified on Cloudera's latest releases, Cloudera Enterprise 4.0 and CDH4. Pentaho also announced that its visual design studio capabilities have been extended to the Sqoop and Oozie components of Hadoop. "Hadoop is a very broad ecosystem. It is not a single project," Ian Fyfe, chief technology evangelist at Pentaho, tells DBTA. Data management software vendor Terracotta has released the latest version of its flagship product, BigMemory 3.7, providing performance at any scale through in-memory data management. The latest release offers improved in-memory access, allowing customers to store big data in real time with high application speed, performance, and scale. "We've made optimizations that allow people to put more data and capacity into our product so that they get more value out of the data that they put in," Gary Nakamura, general manager of Terracotta, explains to DBTA.

Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., is using Entrinsik's Informer software to keep its emergency notification system refreshed with the most up-to-date information. According to Sharon Shelton, vice president of marketing at Entrinsik, who describes the implementation in a new blog post this month on the Entrinsik website, the college purchased a new emergency notification system and they wanted the system updated frequently. The project was a high priority for the college because it needed to be able to get messages out to the students, faculty and staff in case of emergencies.

Oracle has introduced a new migration tool that aims to make it easier for users to migrate data from SQL Server to MySQL. The new migration tool is integrated into MySQL Workbench, which allows the visual design, development and administration of MySQL Databases. According to Oracle, with MySQL Workbench, SQL Server developers and DBAs can easily convert existing applications to run on MySQL, both on Windows and other platforms. In addition, to address the growing demand from business analysts using MySQL for data marts and analytic applications, Oracle has announced a new "MySQL for Excel" application plug-in that allows users to import, export and manipulate MySQL data, without requiring prior MySQL technical knowledge.

SAP AG has announced new business intelligence (BI) innovations to bring customers richer business insights. Now generally available, feature pack 3 for the 4.0 release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions - including SAP BusinessObjects BI, Edge edition - and the 1.0.1 release of SAP Visual Intelligence software equip users with analytics tools that are easy to access and use. IBM announced its second-quarter income and revenues, stating that while hardware and systems revenues were down from the same time a year ago, software sales held steady or grew. Overall, IBM's net income for the quarter was $3.9 billion, compared with $3.7 billion in the second quarter of 2011, an increase of 6%. Total revenues for the second quarter of 2012 of $25.8 billion were down 3% from the second quarter of 2011. Currency fluctuations negatively impacted revenue growth by approximately $1 billion.

CA Technologies announced new releases of its CA Database Management Solutions for DB2 for z/OS and CA Mainframe Chorus role-based workspace to help customers as they upgrade to the latest release of IBM DB2 for z/OS. "We estimate that 75% of customers haven't upgraded to DB2 10 for z/OS," Mark Combs, CA distinguished senior vice president, Mainframe, tells 5 Minute Briefing.
