Logi Analytics, a data analytics company, has formed a partnership with Hortonworks, a contributor to and provider of Apache Hadoop technology, to help its customers better address the challenges they are facing as they collect and store more information than ever before. Hortonworks provides the Hortonworks Data Platform, an enterprise-grade Hadoop distribution. Logi Analytics provides web-based BI and analytic applications that can be integrated within applications, systems, and processes. As a result of the new partnership, Logi Analytics customers can connect directly to the Hortonworks Data Platform, allowing them to uncover new insights, distribute valuable information, and improve business decision making.

EMC's CEO and chairman Joe Tucci gave a keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2013 on the transition occurring in IT and the data center of the future. There are four key macro trends driving the transformation in IT, said Tucci. These tremendously disruptive and opportunistic trends include mobility, cloud computing, big data, and social networking. Jeremy Burton, EVP at EMC, cited a recent IOUG-Unisphere Research survey report which showed that the daily DBA activities most on the rise are systems monitoring, performance diagnosis, and managing backup and recovery. Oracle and EMC are integrating their technologies to allow customers to spend less time in the back office so they can devote more time to the front office dealing with more impactful business issues, said Burton.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison made three key announcements in his opening keynote at Oracle OpenWorld, the company's annual conference for customers and partners in San Francisco. Ellison unveiled the Oracle Database In-Memory Option to Oracle Database 12c which he said speeds up query processing by "orders of magnitude," the M6 Big Memory Machine, and the new Oracle Database Backup Logging Recovery Appliance. Explaining Oracle's goals with the new in-memory option, Ellison noted that in the past there have been row-format databases, and column-format databases that are intended to speed up query processing. "We had a better idea. What if we store data in both formats simultaneously?"

In a tightly contested match for the three seats up for election on the PASS Board of Directors, members of the Professional Association for SQL Server selected directors for two new regional seats and an open seat for the 2014/2015 term. This year, the PASS Board converted two seats to regional director-at-large seats, designating one for EMEA to bring more international perspective as PASS continues to grow globally and one for the US/Canada. An open director-at-large seat, without regional restrictions, was also up for election.

Tokutek, a provider of big data performance solutions, has introduced TokuMX Enterprise Edition with hot backup. This new edition is designed to eliminate backup-related downtime for non-stop big data applications. TokuMX is an open source database and a performance engine for MongoDB. TokuMX delivers support for ACID transactions without any changes to an application, 20x performance improvements and, on the compression side, a 90% reduction in database size. When databases get extremely large, this is a significant money saver, explained Coco Jaenicke, vice president of marketing, Tokutek, in an interview.

IBM says it will be shipping z/OS Version 2 Release 1 (z/OS V2.1) today, which includes enhanced support for cloud and mobile computing. The new version of z/OS is engineered to help enterprises pursue the innovation to drive highly scalable workloads -- including private clouds and support for mobile and social applications, IBM said. The new operating system also is designed for big data workloads, with a new security infrastructure and an optimized data availability that supports data analytics solutions.

Red Hat, a provider of enterprise open source solutions, announced new enhancements and a roadmap for its OpenShift platform, which facilitates the creation, integration and management of applications and business processes in the cloud. The new line of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings include Red Hat JBoss xPaaS services for OpenShift provide enterprise application, integration and business process automation capabilities and services in an extensible open PaaS platform, and is designed to enable development and deployment of enterprise applications and business processes in the cloud.

Violin Memory, Inc., a provider of memory-based storage systems, announced the availability of a suite of memory services software designed to accelerate, tier, migrate and protect application data in the enterprise data center. The new offering, Violin Maestro, is part of Violin's Enterprise Memory Software portfolio, and is intended to help bring the speed of memory to enterprise applications running on legacy storage, while enabling a transition from disk to a memory-based data center.

The OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source framework to advance software-defined networking (SDN), recently provided a first glimpse at the OpenDaylight SDN architecture for the first release called "Hydrogen." "The OpenDaylight community is developing an SDN architecture that supports a wide range of protocols and can rapidly evolve in the direction SDN goes, not based on any one vendor's purposes," explained David Meyer, Technical Steering Committee chair, OpenDaylight Project.

At LinuxCon 2013, IBM announced plans to invest $1 billion in new Linux and open source technologies for IBM's Power Systems servers. The new pledge recalled the company's announcement in 2000 that it would embrace Linux as strategic to its systems strategy, followed a year later with the promise of $1 billion dedicated to backing the Linux movement. The new investment will fuel two immediate initiatives - a new client center in Europe and a Linux on Power development cloud.

MemSQL announced that its distributed in-memory database can now provide JSON analytics, to deliver a consolidated view of structured and semi-structured data, including standard enterprise and social-media data. Dataguise, a provider of data security intelligence and protection solutions, has secured $13 billion in Series B funding. According to Dataguise, traditional approaches to securing Hadoop fail because they are too complex, expensive, and incapable of selectively protecting the data that matters in large and diverse environments. Dataguise's solution, DG for Hadoop, aims to provide an efficient and economical method of determining where and how to secure sensitive data in Hadoop. "We are helping people go from a sandbox environment to the production environment," Manmeet Singh, CEO, Dataguise, said in an interview.

Syncsort, a software company specializing in high speed sorting products, data integration and backup software and services, has formed a technology partnership with Cloudera. The joint effort is aimed a providing an approach that customers can leverage to exploit critical mainframe data in Hadoop for big data analytics. "We view Cloudera as enabling a lot of the enterprise-level services that Hadoop needs," said Jorge Lopez, director of product marketing, Syncsort, in an interview. "Together, we can really bridge the gap between the mainframe and Hadoop."

In its latest release of Oracle Identity and Access Management, Oracle has added enhancements to Oracle Identity Governance, a single governance solution combining provisioning, analytics and privileged account management that Oracle says can reduce the time to certify accounts by 30 percent when compared with running separate tools. Oracle Identity Governance Suite has been certified on both Oracle Weblogic and IBM WebSphere.

Accenture and SAP are expanding their global alliance by providing clients with end-to-end solutions running on the SAP HANA platform. Accenture will be the single point of contact for clients handling contracts for all software and services, allowing clients to focus on deployments of the solutions, either as a public or private cloud service. The first offering ready for release is the Marketing Performance Solution by Accenture and SAP, which enables chief marketing officers (CMOs) to view and act on centralized key marketing performance data such as sales figures, media spend and social reach in near real-time.

Revelation Software has completely redesigned its website, using the Joomla content management system. "The nice thing is that our O4W and our SQL connector are tightly connected with the Joomla site as well. Oracle has rolled out the new StorageTek T10000D tape drive. With 54% more capacity per cartridge over the previous generation, up to 8.5 TB of native capacity per cartridge and native data rates of 252 MB/sec, Oracle says the StorageTek T10000D tape drive can help customers reduce acquisition costs for data center backup by 35%. Deployed in the Oracle StorageTek SL8500 tape library system, the StorageTek T10000D enables customers to scale in excess of 68 exabytes of capacity under a single point of management.

RainStor, a provider of an enterprise database for managing and analyzing all historical data, has introduced RainStor FastForward, a new product that enables customers to re-instate data from Teradata tape archives (also known as BAR for Backup, Archive and Restore) and move it to RainStor for query. The new RainStor FastForward product resolves a pressing challenge for Teradata customers that need to archive their Teradata warehouse data to offline tape, which can make it difficult to access and query that data when business and regulatory users require it, Deirdre Mahon, vice president of marketing, RainStor, explained in an interview.

Syncsort, a provider of big data integration solutions, has announced the availability of MFX ZPCopy, a new software product that can offload mainframe copy processing to zIIP engines, and can be licensed separately as an add-on to Syncsort MFX. After looking at mainframe processing from several customers, Syncsort realized that copy-related processing accounts for hundreds of hours of CPU processing time annually and contributes to batch window bottlenecks, inflating software costs and making it more difficult to meet SLA, said Jorge Lopez, director of product marketing at Syncsort, in an interview.

BMC Software, a provider of system management software, has introduced a new tool intended to help companies decrease their IBM mainframe software expenses. With its new Cost Analyzer for zEnterprise, BMC says it is able to deliver predictive analytics that can help IT departments plan, report and reduce their mainframe licensing charge by identifying system peaks, and recommending preemptive cost-reduction strategies. The technology is aimed at helping customers increase their confidence in their data, their speed in gaining business value out of their data, and sharpen their skill sets to address big data challenges."We have to hold that data to the same standards, manage it, and govern it appropriately for the enterprise. You can't drop those standards because it is unstructured data," said Nancy Kopp-Hensley, a director in product marketing and strategy for Big Data Systems at IBM, in an interview.

The NeXtScale System is an addition to IBM's x86 portfolio, designed to run applications with the power of a supercomputer in any data center, via an open architecture that will support options for compute, storage, and graphics processing acceleration.
