Syncsort has certified its DMExpress data integration software for high-performance loading of HP's recently released analytics platform software, HP Vertica 6. HP's Vertica FlexStore architecture allows access to any data, including structured, semi-structured and unstructured, stored in any location. Attunity CloudBeam, Attunity's recently introduced SaaS platform for Amazon Web Services (AWS), has expanded its services to provide a new data replication-as-a-service solution for AWS' Simple Storage Service (S3). Currently available for testing, the service provides replication and synchronization of big data stored in S3 across AWS cloud regions to enable business-critical initiatives, including disaster recovery, backup and data distribution. Citrusleaf, which provides a real-time NoSQL database and key-value store, has rebranded the company and product as Aerospike. According to the company, the name change reflects the increasing adoption by a new generation of web-scale applications that demand near-instantaneous response. IBM announced an updated mainframe server configured to meet the heightened performance demands of cloud computing, as well as providing enhanced security. The zEnterprise EC12 mainframe server also offers support for operational analytics that can help clients sift through large volumes of raw data and transform it to gain knowledge that can be used for competitive advantage. The EC12 is the result of an investment of over $1 billion in IBM R&D, and the work of more than 2,500 development engineers across 18 labs worldwide, says Rod Adkins, senior VP of IBM's Systems and Technology Group.

Luminex Software, a virtual tape solutions vendor, and Nirvanix, a provider of cloud storage, have teamed up to provide a new cloud-based tape vaulting solution designed specifically for mainframe environments. As a result, the companies say, mainframe customers are no longer limited to open or distributed systems, and can securely store mainframe tape volumes in the Nirvanix Cloud Storage Network and access them globally.

William Data Systems (WDS) has introduced a new gateway server intended to help data centers move to the IPv6 protocol. According to WDS, transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 is a challenge for many customers, since there are costs and risks of changes to applications, networks and hardware. The vendor's ZEN Application Gateway (ZAG) is a software solution designed to help implement IPv6 under z/OS by minimizing the need to make changes to applications, hardware or networks. "Our ZEN Application Gateway can be used for either production or testing, it depends on the shop's agenda," Graham Storey, vice president of marketing at WDS, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Neebula Systems, a provider of service modeling and management solutions, has unveiled a preview of its latest cloud management solution, the Neebula ServiceWatch solution in the cloud. The offering is intended to provide IT managers access to a software-as-a-service (SaaS)-based product to discover and map IT resources - hardware and software - that make up a specific business service. Progress Software is offering a limited-availability preview program of its new driver for Hadoop, a fully-compliant ODBC driver supporting multiple Hadoop distributions out-of-the-box. According to Progress, the new DataDirect Connect for ODBC driver for Hadoop will deliver the same efficiency that its existing data connectivity portfolio already provides to more than 300 OEM partners and hundreds of thousands of users. The DataDirect for Connect ODBC driver for Hadoop will offer support for popular Hadoop distribution frameworks, including Apache, Cloudera, MapR, and Amazon EMR. SAP AG introduced a new solution to help organizations gain real-time insights into market trends and customer sentiment. The SAP rapid-deployment solution for sentiment intelligence with SAP HANA is intended to allow users to analyze customer sentiment from social networking sites, communities, wikis, blogs and other sources, and combine the information with CRM data. Customers that have had success getting started with big data analytics are the ones that have set out to solve a very specific use case or set out to solve a specific problem, David Jonker, director of marketing for database and technology at SAP, tells DBTA. Business intelligence software vendor Tableau has announced that direct access to the MapR Distribution for Apache Hadoop for big data analytics is included in Tableau 7.0.7. This enables customers to instantly construct reports, data visualizations and dashboards without any programming or coding. The 7.0.7 update also includes support for Tableau's Desktop and Server products in Japanese.

Quest Software has announced that vRanger 6.0, the latest version of its virtual data protection solution which provides backup, replication, and recovery for VMware, now also enables customers to back up and restore physical Windows servers. Providing a single source of protection for both virtual and physical environments, vRanger 6.0 is VMware Ready certified for vSphere 5, provides OS support for Windows Server 2003 and 2008, and also will support Windows Server 2012 upon its release to market. VMware, Inc., a provider of virtualization and cloud infrastructure, says it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nicira, Inc., a network virtualization vendor. VMware will acquire Nicira for approximately $1.05 billion in cash plus approximately $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties expect the acquisition to close during the second half of 2012, according to VMware. The acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both VMware and Nicira and the stockholders of Nicira.

STORServer, a provider of data backup solutions for the mid-market, has announced the availability of version 4.5 of its Archive Backup Client for OpenVMS, which enables users to include their OpenVMS servers in their heterogeneous IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup solution. The updates to the backup software include a major enhancement to file backup speed and performance when backing up large numbers of files in a single directory. According to the company, it has verified backup performance improvements of nearly 30 times the throughput of the previous implementation.

Oracle announced a new release of its mainframe rehosting platform, now optimized for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, that it says is capable of delivering up to 8x performance gains for rehosted IBM CICS and IMS applications. The platform is intended to help customers reduce mainframe IT costs by rehosting larger-scale mainframe applications more rapidly and running them more efficiently on traditional Linux or Unix servers, engineered systems, and in enterprise clouds.
