SAP AG has announced a free mobile developer license, a new SAP Mobile Apps Partner program, and additional support for integrating the software development frameworks from Adobe, Appcelerator Titanium, and Sencha with the SAP mobile platform. Pentaho's Business Analytics 4.5 is now certified on Cloudera's latest releases, Cloudera Enterprise 4.0 and CDH4. Pentaho also announced that its visual design studio capabilities have been extended to the Sqoop and Oozie components of Hadoop. "Hadoop is a very broad ecosystem. It is not a single project," Ian Fyfe, chief technology evangelist at Pentaho, tells DBTA. "Sqoop and Oozie are shipped as part of Cloudera's distribution so that is an important part of our support for Cloudera as well - providing that visual support which nobody else in the market does today."

Oracle has announced Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software 2.0. According to Oracle, customers in 43 countries across 22 industries have already adopted Oracle Exalogic, and it is the fastest growing Oracle engineered system with 3x Y/Y sales bookings based on the last two quarters of FY 2012. The second generation of Exalogic is raising the bar even further, with a single integrated system that addresses the key business goals of application owners - to seize market opportunities, lower business risk and reduce cost and complexity, noted Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president for product development at Oracle, who spoke during a webcast presentation to launch the new release.

Data management software vendor Terracotta has released the latest version of its flagship product, BigMemory 3.7, providing performance at any scale through in-memory data management. The latest release offers improved in-memory access, allowing customers to store big data in real time with high application speed, performance, and scale. "We've made optimizations that allow people to put more data and capacity into our product so that they get more value out of the data that they put in," Gary Nakamura, general manager of Terracotta, explains to DBTA.

Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., is using Entrinsik's Informer software to keep its emergency notification system refreshed with the most up-to-date information. According to Sharon Shelton, vice president of marketing at Entrinsik, who describes the implementation in a new blog post this month on the Entrinsik website, the college purchased a new emergency notification system and they wanted the system updated frequently. The project was a high priority for the college because it needed to be able to get messages out to the students, faculty and staff in case of emergencies.

Oracle has introduced a new migration tool that aims to make it easier for users to migrate data from SQL Server to MySQL. The new migration tool is integrated into MySQL Workbench, which allows the visual design, development and administration of MySQL Databases. According to Oracle, with MySQL Workbench, SQL Server developers and DBAs can easily convert existing applications to run on MySQL, both on Windows and other platforms. In addition, to address the growing demand from business analysts using MySQL for data marts and analytic applications, Oracle has announced a new "MySQL for Excel" application plug-in that allows users to import, export and manipulate MySQL data, without requiring prior MySQL technical knowledge.

Big data analytics provider Datameer has announced that its technology is now integrated into Dell's Emerging Solutions Ecosystem, which offers complementary hardware, software, and services in a pre-packaged bundle. Built with Dell infrastructure, Datameer analytics technology is offered on top of Cloudera's distribution of Apache Hadoop. SAP AG has announced new business intelligence (BI) innovations to bring customers richer business insights. Now generally available, feature pack 3 for the 4.0 release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions - including SAP BusinessObjects BI, Edge edition - and the 1.0.1 release of SAP Visual Intelligence software equip users with analytics tools that are easy to access and use. The feature pack release for SAP Crystal Server software is planned to be generally available this month.

IBM announced its second-quarter income and revenues, stating that while hardware and systems revenues were down from the same time a year ago, software sales held steady or grew. Overall, IBM's net income for the quarter was $3.9 billion, compared with $3.7 billion in the second quarter of 2011, an increase of 6%. Total revenues for the second quarter of 2012 of $25.8 billion were down 3% from the second quarter of 2011. Currency fluctuations negatively impacted revenue growth by approximately $1 billion.

CA Technologies announced new releases of its CA Database Management Solutions for DB2 for z/OS and CA Mainframe Chorus role-based workspace to help customers as they upgrade to the latest release of IBM DB2 for z/OS. In the always-on global economy, access to enterprise data is critical, and interruptions and delays in the flow of information necessary for decision-making can have serious consequences. A new study fielded by Unisphere Research among IOUG members and sponsored by Oracle explores the issues related to planned and unplanned downtime, alongside high availability and disaster recovery solutions. The survey which garnered input from 358 data managers and professionals, finds that at least half of the respondents are working to provide their organizations with real-time or near-real-time data, but the challenge to meeting this goal is increasing as data volumes escalate and the variety and velocity of data heightens as well.

Data virtualization vendor Composite Software and Armanta, Inc., a provider of an integrated BI and analytics platform, have formed a partnership to deliver end-to-end enterprise risk management solutions to the financial services industry. The recent financial crisis points to a need for better enterprise level risk management, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing at Composite Software, tells 5 Minute Briefing. However, he notes, the challenge with traditional risk management is that it does not include enough factors for the analysis or may not be capable of handling the volume of information that should be considered for analysis. "If you can't access all the information, or the information is at a volume level that is too great to analyze, then you are really not able to manage risk, and do what-if analysis to avoid problems."

Jaspersoft, maker of business intelligence (BI) software, today announced availability of Jaspersoft Business Intelligence 4.7, with reports generated by JasperReports Server now give casual users the ability to interact with more of their data. According to Jaspersoft, its open source business model and zero-cost per-user licensing fees make interactive reporting affordable for even the largest scale reporting projects. Additional improvements in Jaspersoft 4.7 include direct native connectivity to big data sources and expanded mobile device support. "This is exciting for a couple of reasons," Mike Boyarski, director of product marketing for Jaspersoft, tells DBTA. "One is that no BI tool out there so far has this level of interactivity for what we call casual BI users."

Compuware Corporation has launched a free online cloud service enabling organizations to compare the speed of their website's performance against leading competitor sites. SpeedoftheWeb.org provides a series of industry-relevant indexes with categorized collections of 1,000 of the world's most trafficked websites - as ranked by Alexa and Compuware Gomez benchmarks. As end-user expectations become greater, the cost of poor website performance also grows, both in terms of lost revenues and brand loyalty. In addition, end users are showing less patience for slow-performing websites, according to Compuware. NuoDB, Inc., a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup, has announced the release of Beta 7 of its web-scale database. The company says the new release provides five times the scalability of the previous version (50 nodes) among other new features. NuoDB takes a shared nothing, asynchronous, peer-to-peer approach that the company says is ideal for the cloud, while also delivering the power, reliability and functionality of a traditional database. The database is planned to be generally available in Q3 2012.

Dell and Quest Software announced they have entered into a definitive agreement for Dell to acquire Quest, an IT management software provider offering a broad selection of solutions that solve the most common and most challenging IT problems. Under terms of the agreement, approved by the boards of directors of both companies, Dell will pay $28 per share in cash for each share of Quest for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $2.4 billion, net of Quest's cash and debt. The transaction is expected to close in Dell's third fiscal quarter, subject to approval by Quest's shareholders and customary conditions.

MapR Technologies will make its distribution for Hadoop available on Google Compute Engine. The combination of the new Google service and the MapR distribution is intended to enable customers to quickly provision large MapR clusters on demand and to take advantage of the scalability of a cloud-based solution. "Off-premise, on-demand computing is an important part of the future for Hadoop," says John Schroeder, CEO and co-founder of MapR Technologies. "MapR is solidifying that future by partnering with Google and leveraging their cost-effective, high performance and scale-out infrastructure."
