Progress Software Corporation announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with Rocket Software for Rocket to acquire the Shadow product. According to the companies, Shadow middleware software is complementary to Rocket Software's existing product portfolio and will offer Rocket customers improvements in total cost of ownership and performance of integration projects that involve mainframe assets.

Real-time IT management company ManageEngine, a division of ZoHo Corp., debuted key product portfolio enhancements at Oracle OpenWorld 2012. In addition to its flagship network monitoring software (NMS), OpManager, the company has upgraded its network configuration and change management (NCCM) solution, DeviceExpert, and enterprise password management software, Password Manager Pro. "Historically, IT has been more of a batch-oriented organization, where you submit a problem and wait for some resolution but as businesses make technology more ingrained in their overall revenue generation and profit generation functions, you just can't have that. It has got to move with the pace of business, and so a lot of the product announcement and development focus for us has been to deliver more real-time capabilities," Raj Sabhlok, president of ManageEngine, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

During his opening keynote address at Oracle OpenWorld, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison announced the Oracle Exadata X3 Database In-Memory Machine - the latest generation of its Oracle Exadata Database Machines - and a key component of the Oracle Cloud. The Exadata X3 Database In-Memory Machine provides significant performance improvements, implementing a mass memory hierarchy that automatically moves all active data into Flash and RAM memory, while keeping less active data on low-cost disks. Oracle also announced a new Eighth-Rack configuration for the Oracle Exadata X3-2 Database In-Memory Machine, in addition to the Full-Rack, Half-Rack, and Quarter-Rack, to bring the benefits of Exadata to a more affordable level for a broader set of use cases such as smaller workloads, testing, development and disaster recovery systems.

Infrastructure software vendor TIBCO Software Inc., has announced the latest version of its data discovery and analytics platform, Spotfire 5.0. Featuring a redesigned in-memory engine, users across the enterprise will be able to visualize and interact with enormous amounts of data. Spotfire 5.0 is integrated with data warehouses such as Teradata, Oracle, and Microsoft, and accesses Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services cubes.

CloudBees, Inc., a Java Platform as a Service (PaaS) provider, announced the availability of two new "one-click" services to customize cloud platforms and to streamline end-to-end application deployments across user-defined runtimes. The first new service, ClickStarts, is intended to reduce to a single click everything needed to create and deploy a running application that builds from source, is set up with continuous integration and deployment, and connects to other hosted services. CA Technologies announced a global distribution agreement with Nastel Technologies, a middleware infrastructure monitoring and management company, which adds Nastel's AutoPilot for middleware management to CA's cross-platform offerings. CA will resell and distribute Nastel's AutoPilot for middleware, covering IBM WebSphere MQ, Message Broker, DataPower and TIBCO. The AutoPilot solution complements the performance management solutions that CA offers by extending the management and monitoring capabilities deeper in the middleware infrastructure.

There is still great demand for terminal emulation, as a new release from Cybele Software, Inc. shows. The vendor released z/Scope Anywhere 7.0, a remote-computing solution for users of IBM mainframes, AS/400, and UNIX systems. Cybele says it designed z/Scope Anywhere 7.0 as a pure HTML5/JavaScript client. There is no ActiveX or Java applet to install, making z/Scope Anywhere "100% native-firewall friendly."

Silver Peak Systems has announced Silver Peak Velocity, a combination of products, pricing and packaging that aims to allow storage administrators to accelerate their offsite replication workloads. SilverPeak Velocity is available for NetApp SnapMirror deployments, providing what the company says is on-average 20x faster offsite replication, and will be available for replication solutions from Dell, EMC, and Hitachi Data Systems in the coming months.

SAP has announced the first SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) standard application benchmark result ever for SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE). Running on the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2, together with enhancement package 5 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application, SAP Sybase ASE achieved a new number-one two-processor Linux result on the two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark.

The opportunities and challenges presented by big data are examined in a new survey of 298 data managers and professionals who are part of the Independent Oracle Users Group. The survey was underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc. According to this new survey, more than one out of 10 data managers now have in excess of a petabyte of data within their organizations, and a majority of respondents report their levels of unstructured data are growing. Fewer than one out of five respondents feel their IT infrastructure will be ready to handle this incoming surge of data. Protecting data overall is important, but unstructured data gets low priority at this time.

Oracle announced the availability of Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2, the latest enhancement to the world's most popular, open source, cross-platform virtualization software. Making it easier and more efficient to manage larger numbers of similar virtual machines, Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2's new VM Group feature enables grouping of VMs so that administrators or users can operate on any number of VMs all at once, through a graphical user interface, APIs, and command line tools. In addition, VMs that don't need user interaction can now be started within Oracle VM VirtualBox the same way as standard VMs. Virtual machines of all types can be set to start automatically after the host system is booted, allowing virtual machines to be managed similarly to other host services.
