InterSystems Corporation has launched the next generation of its InterSystems HealthShare strategic informatics platform for interoperability and active analytics. Designed originally for public health information exchanges (HIEs) at regional, state and national levels, HealthShare has been extended and re-architected to also deliver the advanced technologies needed by integrated delivery networks (IDNs). Despite IT industry talk about the need for real-time data, a new survey of more than 330 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications reveals that access to current data to support decision making is not actually possible for many companies. At least half of companies represented in the survey indicate that relevant data still takes 24 hours or longer to reach decision makers.

Embarcadero Technologies has introduced a new version of its database management and development platform, DB Power Studio XE3, which offers enhancements to further improve the performance and availability of databases. The new release offers increased coverage across database platforms by delivering multiple feature enhancements for each product in the suite, including DB Artisan, Rapid SQL, and DB Optimizer, as well as direct access to Embarcadero's support team. Confio Software has introduced its Ignite 8.2 database performance software. The rapidly-growing company based in Boulder, Colo., has tripled in size during the past 3 years, delivering tools that identify, pinpoint and resolve pain points in Sybase, Oracle, SQL Server, and DB2 databases, under the theme of "Keep it simple and get to the problem in four clicks." The new version of Ignite 8.2 includes enhanced features offering expanded support for Sybase; Oracle Exadata, RAC and ASM; as well as for SQL Server.

Plans are underway for an event specifically focused on Sybase PowerBuilder and tools that will be separate from TechEd but held at the same time and location, according to Christine Weber, marketing manager, Events, at Sybase, an SAP company. There will also be close to 100 hours of sessions specifically focused on Sybase database and analytics products at SAP TechEd 2012, Weber tells 5 Minute Briefing. "It is a good portion and it is focused on the traditional kind of content that we have always done with Sybase." Sybase-specific content will include tips and tricks on how to use existing products, as well as previews of what's ahead in new product releases. Now that the call for papers has closed, Sybase is going through its approval process for the presentations. Well over 200 presentations were submitted - "a good problem to have," Weber notes.

Vormetric, Inc., provider of enterprise encryption and key management, has announced that Vormetric Encryption now supports Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (AES-NI) on-chip technology for accelerated encryption/decryption tasks. Versant Corporation has announced the availability of version 0.9 of its Versant Java Persistence API (JPA), allowing organizations to leverage the benefits of an enterprise-grade NoSQL solution via the Java industry-standard database programming interface. By using the Versant JPA to lower the barriers to NoSQL adoption, Versant says, enterprises can tackle volume, variety, and velocity challenges presented by big data management, and derive value from gaining more insights into information models faster and more easily. Versant JPA version 0.9 represents the first feature complete version of the API binding since the release of a Technology Preview in December 2011.

Storage memory platform vendor Fusion-io has announced that NoSQL database provider Couchbase is integrating to run Couchbase Server natively on ioMemory through Fusion-io's software development kit. Through the Fusion-io Key-Value API, Couchbase will integrate its database with persistent memory and offer the optimized code as open source to the community.

Software AG has launched Data Masking for Adabas, a solution created to enable Adabas customers to design and test applications using actual production data that has been altered to ensure the privacy and security of the data itself. "By being able to mask this data they will be able to comply with data protection regulations such as HIPAA and the EU Data Protection Directive and others that basically say you can't put sensitive data out there for people to work with, even in non-production environments," Bruce Beaman, senior director, product marketing, at Software AG, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

IBM and Red Hat, Inc. announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with the KVM hypervisor on IBM Systems has been awarded Common Criteria Certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL4+). The Common Criteria is an internationally recognized set of standards used by the federal government and other organizations to assess the security and assurance of technology products. This security certification is the first of its kind for an open source virtualization solution.

Red Gate has announced that its SQL Server development tools now support SQL Server on Amazon RDS, the latest cloud-based database offering from Amazon. In addition, the company says, its SQL Developer Bundle also supports Amazon RDS, enabling users to continue to compare, manage, and deploy their schemas and data with their regular tools, even when they are moving between RDS and other SQL Server instances.

IBM has announced plans to acquire Tealeaf Technology, Inc., a provider of customer experience analytics software that helps organizations react more quickly to consumer trends. Teradata and Aprimo, a Teradata company that provides integrated marketing management software, have signed of a definitive agreement to acquire Munich-based eCircle, a European provider of cloud-based digital marketing software. According to Teradata, the addition of eCircle more than triples Aprimo's European team, expertise and reach in all major European countries, and enables the delivery of eCircle solutions globally. The transaction is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2012.

Open source business analytics provider Pentaho has released Pentaho Business Analytics 4.5, providing customers with new user-driven, interactive visualizations as well as expanded analytics capabilities that can access all sources of data. The product merges data integration with business analytics in one platform. 10gen, the company behind MongoDB, has announced its support for MongoDB with Node.js. This includes an official Node.js driver as well as commercial support from 10gen for MongoDB-backed applications developed with Node.js. Node.js joins the existing set of programming languages and environments 10gen supports, including Java, PHP, C#, Ruby, Python, C++, C, Perl, Scala, Haskell and Erlang. Launched in 2009 and sponsored by Joyent, JavaScript-based Node.js is designed to help developers build data-intensive, real-time applications that support large numbers of concurrent users and devices.

IBM introduced a series of new Linux-based systems and solutions intended to help companies exploit the cost efficiency of Linux and virtualization for business-critical workloads. The company has introduced a new BA Series Backup Appliance; updated the Enterprise Backup Appliance (EBA) line; enhanced pricing on Instant Restore (IR) Appliances; and is offering stand-alone sales of STORServer Console (SSC). As a result, the company, which sells exclusively through a reseller channel, says it now offers a backup appliance for every budget and environment.

Progress Software Corporation announced a new strategic focus in which it will become a provider of a next-generation, context-aware application development and deployment platform in the cloud for the application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) market, by beefing up investments in its core OpenEdge, DataDirect Connect, and Apama Analytics and Decisions products and integrating them into a single offering. As part of the plan, Progress says it will divest multiple product lines that are not core to the new vision and launch immediate operational restructuring initiatives to significantly reduce annual costs.

IBM announced an overall 7% jump in profitability in the first quarter of 2012 over the previous year, but hardware and server revenues lagged. The company's net income for the quarter was $3.1 billion, compared with $2.9 billion in the first quarter of 2011. Total revenues for the first quarter of 2012 of $24.7 billion were flat (up 1%, adjusting for currency) from the first quarter of 2011.

Quest Software has released version 11.5 of its Toad for Oracle software, the flagship product in the Toad portfolio of productivity software for database developers, DBAs, and analysts. Drawing on community feedback from their two million users, Quest has introduced a number of new features and improvements, most notably a new social intelligence component. Toad for Oracle 11.5, Quest contends, will allow users to take advantage of the best ideas and practices from the community and further increase user productivity.
